Assessment 2: Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) 30%, 900 words Jemma Lawn s4590872 Professional Knowledge S1: Know students and how they learn S2: Know the content and how to teach it The Montessori method believes that “children learn by exploring, discovering and manipulating the environment” (), as educators we must demonstrate knowledge on how students learn and structure our teaching around this knowledge. By allowing the children to seek their learning, it allows us as educators to see what they are interested in and design and implement activities that are based upon the children’s interests. As educators we also need be inclusive of every student, this means we must seek strategies to support the full participation of students with disabilities, we must understand the legislative requirements that support this and design and implement actives that allow the participation of children with disabilities. In our practice we must also demonstrate and understand the impact of the local communities and develop programs that support the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in a respectful way. This standard explains the importance of understanding the content and the curriculum. Jean Piaget “viewed cognitive growth as a progressive change” (Dr Ruhee, n.d), therefore it is important to design and implement accurate content to the children based on their age, knowledge, and skills. It is also important to organise the content in a well-sequenced learning program, to allow the children to get the most of their learning. As educators we need to provide students the opportunities to develop knowledge and understand about the culture, history, and languages of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is also important to implement effective teaching strategies for using ICT into learning to make the content relevant and exciting to the children. We must also use these teaching strategies to support and improve students literacy and numeracy journey. Professional Practice S3: Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning S4: Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments S5: Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning Developing and setting goals for students is an important part of teaching, we it allows for the children to challenge themselves and pursue goals in the education. It is important to learn and implement teaching strategies in all aspects of teaching. We can use these teaching strategies to evaluate our teaching programs and to improve them, in doing this it will improve student learning. These teaching strategies will also allow us to plan and implement well-structured and sequenced learning into the classroom. To support children in their studies we must select, create, and use a range of resources that will help children to engage in their learning. As an educator it is important to lead by example and use communication both verbal and nonverbal to support and assist students engagement, participation, achievements and understanding. Students participation one of the most important parts of the classroom, therefore as educators it is crucial that we develop strategies and activities that support students participation and engagement in the classroom. As well as being able to organise activities for the students, give clear and informative directions, and create an environment where students can spend time on learning activities. As educators it is important that we are aware on how to understand and manage challenging behaviour, we can do this by having class discussions and collaboratively creating a set of classroom norms. Safety plays a huge role in the classroom and school environment; therefore, it is important to implement the schools policies and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the students. It is also important to ensure that the students are using ICT in a safe and responsible way. For students to have a successful educational journey, educators much understand assessment strategies and how to apply curriculum to evaluate the students learning. It is also important to ensure that as educators we are providing effective and appropriate feedback to the students on their learning. Educators need to understand and apply strategies for reporting to students and parents/families/careers about the students learning and achievements and understanding the purpose of keeping reliable records of these reports. Educators also need to use these assessment reports to analyse and evaluate students and their understand of the content and adjusting our teaching practice is necessary. Professional Engagement S6: Engage in professional learning S7: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community As educators we must have sound knowledge and understanding of the Australia Professional Standards for teachers and demonstrate this in identifying professional learning needs. As educators we need to continue to participate in professional learning which will allow us to develop and update our knowledge and will improve our practice. We also need to engage in professional discussions with our colleagues to improve and evaluate our practices, as well as seek and applying constructive feedback. This standard believes that teachers need to seek and undertake professional learning and engage This APST standard believes in the value of the wider community to improve the quality of teaching and learning, Barbara Rogoff believed in the development of children in the context of their own communities (Nolan & Raban, 2015). To further build on and improve the children’s learning, as educators we must develop and maintain respectful and cooperative relationships with parents/family/careers of the students. In doing this, we can create new learning opportunities based on conversations had with family members. As educators we must also understand, respect, and comply with the code of ethics and maintain a high ethical standard and support our colleagues to do the same. We need to also
with our colleagues to discuss the effectiveness of our professional learning. We must also apply our professional learning into our classroom to improve the learning of our students. Professional learning is an important part of our teaching standards as we need to continue to grow and learn with our students and their needs. understand and comply with the relevant legislative, administrative and organisation policies.
