In this letter, describe one group of vulnerable or marginalized people, the challenges they face in accessing the right to vote, and the ways in which social workers can help to address that issue. I am writing to draw your attention to a specific issue affecting migrants in the US. Migrant groups suffer from many challenges regarding voting. The difficulties come from language barriers, a lack of access, and other obstacles, such as voter ID rules, which have underlying racial biases and prohibit migrants from actively participating. To my understanding, there used to be a Voting Rights Act that made it easier for migrants and other disadvantaged groups to vote. However, the United States Supreme Court amended several regulations, allowing states and districts to adjust voter ID requirements without federal permission. This, in turn, had an impact on the election because it eliminated a large number of potential voters. "Social work navigates power in policy making and politics to elicit social change. It is grounded in core social work values and ethics, including the professional responsibility to challenge systemic discrimination and institutional inequalities through political action." (Shannon R., 2021). The solution is in the hands of social workers.Social workers fulfill their ethical responsibilities to take political action in order to improve social, economic, and racial justice. Voting is crucial to a social worker because communities that vote receive more government attention and resources than those with lower voter turnout. Voting is also associated with improved physical and mental health, which is significant for social workers. Some people do not
vote for a variety of reasons, including a lack of transportation, information, job schedules, mobility constraints, or identification. These are all topics that social workers can help people with, thus it is not just vital for social professionals to vote, but they must also be interested and involved in the process. Social programs that aid social workers with their daily requirements may also be influenced by who is elected; this is why social workers must express their thoughts and participate in voting .
