Jimenez 1 Nicole Jimenez Professor Regine Darius ENC1102 14 July 2023 A Truthful Look at NFL Regulations, Defending their Precariousness. It is important to note that a simple decision can have a considerable impact on the life of a person. In this case, the NFL is threatening the lives of its players by failing to generate measures to prevent concussions. As for right now, the thesis that I have built for the discussion and research of this topic is "The most prestigious sport in the United States, American football, demonstrates a considerable danger to players within the National Football League (NFL) on account of the elevated risk of concussions and the development of extensive health complications, it is important to consider and regulate with specific measures these risks for the health of players." The thesis is focused on understanding and signaling all aspects to demonstrate the impact that concussions can have on the life of players and the development of appropriate measures for the true prevention and elimination of this serious condition. In spite of this, according to the NFL itself and other entities, concussions pose no danger to the lives of players, and the establishment of measures for preventing them has progressed in a significant manner. In first instance, according to the review by the Wire University about the protocols used in the injury of a Dolphin’s team player, it states that both the NFL and the Dolphins took the appropriate measures after the injury that Tua Tagovailoa received (Souza and Smith). More specifically, the player is forced out of the game and to receive treatment by personnel and independent neurotrauma consultants provided by the NFL to which the conclusion is that while
Jimenez 2 not having severe trauma it is not necessary to incapacitate him and he can properly return to the game. The NFL proposes that medical reviews make the appropriate study to confirm that there is no presence of any potential head trauma and with its proper diagnosis the necessary information and prevention is acquired. Nevertheless, according to a report by CNN, the measures taken in this situation are questionable. With the support of the compendium of information by experts, CNN exposes that the measures proposed by the NFL are not necessary to care for players before and after a concussion. First, when interviewing an NFL executive, he himself says that "a lot of the spotters, the trainers, the doctors had gotten a bit, quote, lackadaisical when it came to evaluating these players for a concussion," which suggests that they recognize weaknesses from within (Marquardt, Alex, et al.). In addition, in the report, they take the opinion of an external expert which is Elizabeth Cohen, CNN Senior Medical Correspondent, who briefly exposes all the medical risks to which the player was exposed in the concussion and all the signs after the deficient assessment medical that led to this injury is a considerable neurological issue due to the ataxia. Ataxia is defined by the Correspondent as “an abnormality of balance, stability, motor coordination, or dysfunctional speech of which the player presented the majority” (Marquardt, Alex, et al.). Therefore, the management protocol proposed by the NFL continues to be precarious to protect the health and life of its players.
