Report
It is evident that American Indians/Native and Blacks have higher disciplinary actions against their students in every district than the rest of the population of students based on data source 1, for blacks that is more than double in terms of ratio of disciplinary actions to actual population. The root cause for black students seems to be missing time in a classroom for the reason of disinterest in their studies. Most teachers just teach as it is their jobs and follow a lesson, it requires an extra effort to be more engaged with students in a classroom and cater each one’s educational needs and understandings’ as well as keep them interested in a lesson enough to retain the information to move on to the next lesson. The simple solution would be to avoid students to have to take on disciplinary actions against them, and as data source 4 discusses. As a first step to this solution would be to improve school discipline policies, mainly by implementing constructive criticism towards a student’s behavior that needs improvement rather than punishable instances that let them understand that they have done something wrong. This would be from the angle of the students, although from the teacher’s perspective, more workshops would need to be set up on understanding the struggles of black students and why they might ever misbehave and that instead of disciplinary actions to be taken to let them know they have done wrong, instead nurturing actions to show them how they can improve their current behavior. More workshops should be made for teachers to also make note to black students how important an education is in the future and explain real world life scenarios of how an education has helped teenagers and adults in the past and can help in their own future. School is not something that was made to just keep kids and students busy but rather to create the next generation of innovators and researchers to continue to make a difference in their generation through learning in a fun and socially beneficial environments. As data source 5 shows, the discipline gap and the academic achievement gap are correlated. To thin out the achievement gap, then discipline must be diminished while a positive effect still be happening with black students, this would not happen overnight but with oversight, the teachers’ understanding of the importance of explaining black students how they can benefit from a better education and want to do better. Overtime as achievement gap starts to thin out, there would be snowball effect as the teachers of black students and the black community together and socially realize how important an education among their youth is where it would be the norm to make sure every student does not need or have any disciplinary action taken on them. Reducing the use of exclusionary discipline overall by improving school climate will help teachers focus on eliminating racial discipline disparities. Creating more trainings for schoolteachers will allow improvement on this. Teachers will learn positive critique and disciplinary methods to motivate rather than discourage and punish students. The school will hold workshops and talks regarding positive ways of encouragement replacing discipline. Some of these methods can include, planning 1 on 1 time with a student and exploring first-hand what their concerns are and how we can work towards a common goal. Teachers can use their guidance to give extra help to students in need and use real world examples or topics of the
child’s interests. We can also focus on praising the positive, by praising our students even in increments for smaller achievements, we can encourage good behavior and reduce the need for discipline. Another method we can implement is distracting creatively. We can take a disciplinary action and instead distract towards a positive outcome. When we distract a student towards something else – by changing the topic, or introducing a different concept, we can successfully divert their energy towards positive behavior. These ideas will improve school climate and culture as students will feel more comfortable and confident with their teachers and will feel as if their teachers truly understand their struggles and want to work towards solutions, rather than guide with disciplinary actions. Implementing these trainings will also require shadowing schools who don't have large disparities to see what is working. These schools may offer other ideas for reducing despite her reaction. By working with other schools, we can work towards achieving a bigger goal throughout the district. Using these tools, we can work with other schools and see the positive effects on the students’ lives. We can also bring school alumni to speak with students on life after school, and how what they learn in school can positively impact their future. We can work with locals in the community and have them directly inspire the students of the communities that they serve. By encouraging graduates and adults in the workplace to come in and speak with students in their own former positions, we can positively show a future and path that the students can one day follow. By inspiring the teachers with trainings and the students with a real life, examples, we can all together work towards reducing the use of exclusionary discipline overall and improving racial disparities in education.
