Jazlyn Berryhill 25 October 2020 Lareau- Chapter 4 Lareau- Chapter 5 Part 1 "A Child's Pace: Tyrec Taylor" talks about the breakdown of nine-year-old Tyrec and the extra-curricular activities organized in his poor working-class family. I felt this chapter emphasized that informal activities make bigger differences than formal activities, even if it's not completely beneficial. Tyrec comes from a working-class family, and his parents are divorced but are a couple trying to work out their issues. He has three siblings, and his mom is the breadwinner, but the funds are still strained. However, his parents can make time for the family. Families' efforts in this class focus on keeping children safe, making sure the child is happy based on activities outside of parent involvement, which is important because we learn most things outside of parental environments. Also, it gives us a chance to learn new skills outside of organized groups, which is shown by Tyrec's mom letting him play football for a while—even if they aren't beneficial at every moment. He learns respect for adults based on his mother's value for the term and discipline if misbehavior occurs. Lareau dissects Tyrec's parents' techniques by telling us the family layout isn't planned or normal, making it better for Tyrec's learning abilities. It allows for freedom and creativity to form due to the lack of organized rules and restrictions, even if it doesn't pay off in institutional settings. "Children's Play for Children: Katie Brindle" talked about Katie, who's a nine-year-old white female in the 4th grade that resides in a poor- working class family as well. Her social life and interactions weren't a big priority in her family compared to Tyrec's, because her family lacked the finance aspect literally outside of basic
needs. I empathized with Katie when she asked Cici for help with the dollhouse. She declined— it really showed me that many families within these classes don't or can't afford to pay attention to their children on the lack of economic support within society. It's interesting because I felt that Katie taught herself to succumb to her lonely pressures to uphold her mom's desire to play with her occasionally. However, it gives her independence and enjoyment, as shown from her happiness, to act out things for people and give her pleasure and imagination at the same time. Thus, giving her an imaginative, constraint future since her skills and needs haven't been catered to in childhood. Part 2 Question: Why did Tyrec's mother put him in "formal" football if he could've gained the same aspects from informal football? Did she make this decision to teach him rules from a structured organization briefly?
