PART 2 REFLECTION ASSIGNMENT Ann Cherian CC-100 Introduction to Criminology Dr. Lauren Eisler April 10th, 2023 Where do you get your information about crime?
I get my information about crime through a variety of sources including. newspapers, TV news and online news outlets. “The media have a significant influence on the general portrayal of crime in society. The images that permeate popular consciousness of crime are mainly generated and reflected in electronic and print media” (Eisler et al., 2022). Other sources include police department and other law enforcement agencies producing public reports or press releases about crimes in their jurisdictions. Scholars and researchers study crime and criminal justice and their findings are published in academic journals and books. There are also various non-profit organisations focuses on criminal justice reform, community safety etc. that provide data about crime. We also tend to obtain information about crime from personal experiences from those of family members, friends and colleagues. Is crime increasing or decreasing in today’s society? On what do you base your answer? Crime rates can vary depending on location, type of crime and time period being examines. In general, the crime rates have decreased due to the advancement of technology that has provided increased security and safety. Other factors that have led to the decline of crime rates are changes in law enforcement strategies, economic growth and demographic shifts etc. For example, In Canada crime rates are measured by Statistics Canada through Uniform Crime Reporting Survey (UCR). It is an annual collection of data from police services across the country”. (Eisler et al., 2022). The UCR allows for moderately consistent measure of crime in Canada. Even though the rise of technology has helped decrease the crime rates, it has also increased the crime rates by the introduction of a variety of cybercrimes like hacking, phishing, fraud etc. Cybercrime has gained so much attention to criminologists due to the multiple different areas it can affect. The four categories they created for it are cyber trespassing, cyber deception and cybertheft, cyberporn and cyber obscenity and lastly cyberviolence. Eisler et al., 2022). Other factors that can increase crime are due to economic and social inequality, political instability and drug-related issues. For example, In Canada, aboriginals represent a disproportionate number of those incarcerated. This situation is the consequence of people
being kept at a social and economic disadvantage. These factors combined, greatly increase the risk of turning to crime. 3. Is society today more dangerous that it was 10 years ago? On what do you base your answer? Determining whether crime was more dangerous ten years ago is hard to determine as it depends on various factors liked the specific location the type of crime etc. But on a general point of view, crime rate has significantly decreased over the past 10 years. With the UCR in place, there is an extensive survey that can approximately measure crime in an area. “The information reported not only includes number of incidents pf a particular crime a year but also breaks that number down by location by clearance status by victim and offender information, and by certain other characteristics of crime.” ( Eisler et al., 2022). The only issue is that not all crimes are to be reported 100 per cent and therefore is tough to measure the crime rate accurately. A general estimate would be able to give us information for governmental program development, police staffing, legislative changes to education and academia. But as the years have advanced, technology has proved to be a bane to our existence in providing various efforts to increase security but has also introduced a new variety of crime known as cybercrime. There have also been significant hate crimes due to discrimination against race, gender, class etc. that remains still prevalent even today. 4. What is the most common crime committed? On what do you base your answer? The most common crime is different according to different locations. However, looking at a more general sense, theft is probably the most common crime committed in various places The easiest crime to commit is theft, which not only affects adults but also teenagers. The motives behind theft can range from simple survival needs to simple avarice. There are numerous sorts of crime. Crimes are sometimes divided into five broad categories by criminologists: violent crime, property crime, white-collar crime, organised crime, and consensual or victimless crime. There are many more particular offences within each. For example, violent crime
