Assignment #1 - Instructions and Submission SUMMARY Balancing the Right to Habilitation with the Right to Personal Liberties by DLANE J. BANNERMAN and JAN B. SHELDON is an article where the authors provide an overview of personal liberties in Behavioural science. The article focuses on their significance in a detractive society where everyone's rights should be met and heard. Through the article, the authors discuss the fundamental rights people with developmental issues should have. The article defines personal liberties as "the individual's right to act freely without interference or constraint from others or society as a whole." Bannerman et al. (1990) During the article, multiple critical points about personal liberties are mentioned. First, the authors argue that while it is essential to protect, even though certain limitations could be necessary to prevent any harm against the client towards themselves or towards others. It reflects the significance of balancing individual rights as well as the others around them. Adding to that point, Bannerman addresses the importance of individual liberties in fostering social cohesion and promoting more diversity within our society. The author's solution is to allow individuals seeking services to express their opinions and needs freely without restraint. They emphasize that reasonable limitations can ensure that these freedoms do not infringe upon the rights of others or lead to social harm.
