Country in Conflict Part 1 SAYRA ARIJ 89169544 Psych 208 The war between the Eveti and Krysenyi has spanned six decades. The root of the conflict can be traced back to the Eveti migration 150 years ago, creating Konstanshia and resulted in a struggle for control over resources. This war can be analyzed using concepts of intergroup relations; Realistic Group Conflict Theory and Social Identity Theory. Realistic Group Conflict Theory, proposed by Muzafer Sherif and Campbell, discusses how conflict arises from competition over limited resources. It explains that outgroup prejudice, discrimination and hostility are due to competing goals over the same resources, such as territory, money, and social status (Lolliot, 2024). This can be seen in the case of Konstanshia. The root cause of the war boils down to a dispute over territory and power. Upon the arrival of Evetis, Evetis gained control of the education system and political dominance. The dominance of Evetis posed a threat to Krysenyis, who feared for their jobs. Additionally, assassination of Vernick Bowie catalyzed the perceived threat, and the fear of economic displacement and language assimilation has increased. The feeling of threat and fear caused a prejudiced attitude among Krysenyi towards Eveti. The deep division between Eveti and Krysenyi can also be analyzed through Social Identity Theory. Social Identity Theory, proposed by Henri Tajfel and John Turner, looks into the role of social identity in intergroup behavior. The theory predicts that humans exist on a continuum, constantly shifting between individual and group identities (Lolliot, 2024). Tajfel and Turner hypothesized that, partly, our self-esteem is based on our group identities. It shows how stability, legitimacy and permeability of group status can lead to a conflict. We can see this in the case of Konstanshia. Evetis has positive self-esteem through self- categorization, where they identify strongly with their group. However, for Krysenyi, the political and language dominance of the Evetis, led to the loss of their language and minimal economic and social power, which led to their lower social status. The assassination of Vernick Bowie changed perception of the group status of Krysenyi, making it not legitimate or permeable, causing a social conflict. The war has already had a loss of over 4,000 lives on both sides, and a significant proportion of the population is getting impacted. The interplay of Social Identity Theory and Realistic Group theory provides insight into how bias and prejudice may have formed and led to the war.
