DQ 1.1- Post #3 It sounds like you have already acquired some valuable skills in your career as a youth worker, which will be indispensable in your counselling practice. Speaking from my experience in therapy, I tend to hold off on the heavy stuff until trust and respect have been established; it seems fitting that the therapeutic relationship shapes the foundational base that needs to be built before going forward with other aspects of the counselling process (MACP Skill Lab, n.d.). As Slay-Westbrook (2017) outlined, respect is a critical element of the therapeutic relationship whereby the counsellor must recognize and have a broad understanding of the client’s identity. Additionally, Slay-Westbrook (2017) proclaimed that empathy is inherent to respect. While empathy is vital in establishing connection, the respect wound around empathy fosters a more profound connection between the counsellor and the client (Slay-Westbrook, 2017). These notions about the therapeutic relationship are profoundly how I want to approach my counselling practice. The time and effort in understanding all parts of the client’s identity, including their values, beliefs, and cultural and social experience, will hopefully foster a warm environment conducive to healing and positive change.
