Isabella Acosta Immigration vs. trolley A real-world case involving immigration I can relate to the trolley problem proofed to give me some insights into the ethical dilemmas and choices faced by policymakers or individuals in this context.  The trolley problem is a thought experiment that involves a decision-maker who must choose between options that may cause harm to different groups. In the case of immigration, I explored how policymakers may grapple with decisions that impact the lives and well-being of various individuals or groups. Real-world Case: Immigration Dilemma Imagine a scenario where a country is facing a significant influx of refugees due to a neighboring country's political instability and violence. The government of the receiving country must decide regarding how to handle this situation, considering the welfare of both the existing citizens and the refugees seeking asylum. Relation to the Real-world Case: In the real-world case of immigration, I related it to "Scenario 1 - The Switch." Here, the decision-makers (governments or policymakers) face the dilemma of choosing between allowing the influx of refugees (potentially impacting the existing citizens' resources and stability) or imposing stricter immigration policies (potentially harming the refugees who are seeking safety and a better life).  As a society we are challenged with deciding between harming a smaller group (diverting the trolley) versus a larger group (allowing the trolley to continue its path), policymakers dealing with immigration must make a similar decision about the balance between protecting the interests of their existing citizens and aiding refugees. Analyzing this scenario through the lens of the trolley problem helps to highlight the ethical complexity of immigration decisions, where policymakers need to consider the well-being of both their citizens and those seeking asylum, ultimately aiming to minimize harm and maximize overall societal welfare while facing constrained resources and potentially opposing interests.
