Roberts 1 Courtney Roberts Eng111-5RP Professor John Wells November 18, 2023 Evaluating Food Uncertainty Among mothers and students in the U.S. Food deficiency is a critical problem that affects millions of people in the United States, especially those who belong to marginalized or low-income groups. Two articles that explore this issue from various perspectives are “Baby Formula Shortage Highlights Inequality in US Maternal Support; Fewer Mothers of Color and Low-income Mothers Breastfeed Their Babies. Better Support and Family Leave Policies Would Help.” by Melody Schreiber and “Millions of Students Experience Food Insecurity. But Campus Food Pantries Can Make a Difference.” by Brianna Hatch. Both articles examine the causes and consequences of malnourishment among specific populations, namely mothers and college students, and propose solutions to address the problem, while differing in focus, scope, and evidence. I will compare the articles and contend that while they mutually determine the scope of food scarcity, they also exhibit the restraints and obstacles of the current policies and practices. One resemblance between the articles is that they both associate the factors that contribute to food shortages among mothers and students. Schreiber explains how the lack of breastfeeding support, family leave, and affordable housing affect the ability of mothers, especially those of color and low-income, to feed their babies. She points out how mothers must return to work soon after giving birth and face challenges in finding time and space to pump breast milk. Hatch discusses how the excessive cost of tuition, housing, and textbooks, as well as
Roberts 2 the lack of financial aid and employment opportunities, affect the food safety of college students. Both articles demonstrate how undernourishment is caused by numerous economic and social factors. The other issue is that they both propose solutions to improve the food safety of mothers and students. Schreiber suggests that better support and family leave policies would help mothers to breastfeed their babies and reduce their reliance on his, her, their, etc. formula, and advocates for additional baby-friendly hospitals, lactation consultants, and workplace places for breastfeeding mothers. (Schreiber) Hatch recommends that campus food pantries can be efficacious for students who experience food insecurity. She also calls for more awareness, funding, and collaboration among campus stakeholders to address the needs of students. (Hatch) These views vary in focus, scope, and evidence. Schreiber focuses more on health and social implications of food anxiety for mothers and babies, while emphasizing on the benefits of breastfeeding for the health and development of infants. She asserts that the risks of formula feeding are contamination, allergies, and infections; and emphasizes that bonding, empowerment, and identity are the social and emotional aspects of breastfeeding. (Schreiber) Hatch focuses on the academic and economic implications of food insecurity for students, underlining the impact of food insecurity on the academic performance and retention of students. (Hatch) Schreiber includes a broader range of populations and contexts, while Hatch focuses on specific sections and locations. Schreiber examines the food insecurity of mothers across the United States, with consideration to the discrepancies between racial and income groups. In contrast, Hatch concentrates on food insecurity with few mentions of other regions or institutions and investigates the current situation and challenges of food scarcity among students, as well as existing involvements at the campus level.
