Assessment - Part 1A Written – Research report Instructions for Written Assessment Task 1A Working individually, students are to choose a community organisation, i.e. Youth, Community Centre, Family Services. Students are then to research a community issue that can be addressed using a community development approach. Although activities can be carried out in groups during class, students are to submit individual papers for marking of own work. Research and assessment are to include: 1. Identify local issue to be researched for your project, providing a brief summary why this is an issue that requires a community development approach. Use at least 3 credible resources researched to support rationale of choice of issue. Examples can include information from Council community profile, Census statistics, publications from Peak Organisations or Government departments Ministry Health. 2. Identify a community development strategy you will use to consult with Key Stakeholder. Describe the consultation method, why you chose this method for your project and identify advantages and challenges. Examples could include World Café, Survey, Social Media. 3 Research, identify and describe local existing programs or services in Community services that currently address this social issue. Include one Peak organisation and 2 local services/programs. 4. Identify local issue to be researched for your project, providing a brief summary why this is an issue that requires a community development approach. Homelessness on the Central Coast is a growing concern and has not shown signs of slowing down in the last couple of decades. It is an issue that requires a community development approach because we are seeing more of an influx of people moving to the coast for various reasons such as escaping costs of Sydney living, closer to work or just because of their certain circumstances. More people means less housing. “Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows the homeless population on the Coast grew from 766 in 2011 to 1031 in 2016. The former Gosford Local Government Area suffered the heaviest increase with homelessness numbers rising to 569.” (Central Coast Homeless Numbers Up, 2018) Great work “The lack of affordable housing and affordable rentals, links to the devastating growth in the numbers of rough sleepers on the Coast. The influx of buyers fleeing Sydney costs, the lowering availability of social housing, and the 20 plus years waiting list for public housing, have created a drastic shortage of affordable housing for sale or rent. The lower rates of pay for all ages living on Newstart, the specific needs for single male and female parents, a rise in many youth not adapting to blended families, aged couples on fixed pensions, and students, have created a low and very low income group with no safe, secure housing within their means. The rough sleepers are the tip of the iceberg.” (Much More Can Be Done for the Homeless, 2018) Great evidence to back up your work, well done. “Homelessness is dramatically increasing on the Central Coast. In the past year, there has been a staggering 110% rise in the number of people becoming homeless on our streets; making the Central Coast the worst region in NSW for homelessness. Families with four or more children are sleeping in their cars, on the streets, in parks and even in caves in our local bush land.” (Homeless No More, 2017) Well done . 2. Identify a community development strategy you will use to consult with Key Stakeholder. Describe the consultation method, why you chose this method for your project and identify advantages and challenges. Examples could include World Café, Survey, Social Media. I would organise a conference using the World Café method as this style of consultation can be easily modified to meet a wide variety of needs. I would be considerate of organising a casual meeting which will be accommodating to a wide range of people including community members, local homeless people, representatives from other organisations/services- which organisations? Be specific . as well as MP and other government professionals- which government professionals? . I would need to be aware of a very flexible guest list (considering most will ‘drop-in’), and an easily accessible location (specifically for the homeless guests to be able to attend.) This meeting would create a warm and casual setting, would allow small group rounds (which would allow convenient interaction, networking and socialisation), a question and answer session, guest speakers, information/pamphlets readily available and even a donation box at the entry for any guests to leave food and blankets etc. Good- you could strengthen this by researching benefits of using a world café and in text reference . 3. Research, identify and describe local existing programs or services in Community services that currently address this social issue. Include one Peak organisation and 2 local services/programs. Homelessness Australia (HA) is the national peak body for homelessness in Australia.
