2 Internal validity is the degree to which an observed effect in a dependent variable was caused by the independent variable only. Threats to internal validity are additional variables, other than the independent variable, that have the potential to affect the dependent variable and lead researchers to inaccurate conclusions. (Rubin & Babbie, 2016) One threat to internal validity is history, which refers to extraneous events that occur during the course or at coinciding time with the study which can affect the dependent variable and therefore confound study results. An example of a history internal validity threat would be conducting a study on how allowing remote work affects employee job satisfaction, but at the time that the study is being conducting the company announces that there will be layoffs in all departments, therefore this additional variable (layoffs) can change the condition of the study and affect the dependent variable (employee job satisfaction). 1.
