2 Final Paper Topic Proposal This term in sociology, I will be exploring the topic of the stigma surrounding addiction. This topic was chosen due to its relevance and impact on society today, as well as an active personal interest. Addiction, as a social issue, matters sociologically because it affects not only the individuals suffering from it but also their relationships and interactions with others in society. The stigma attached to addiction often leads to social exclusion, discrimination, and strained relationships, thereby influencing the social fabric (Conerly et al., 2021). The sociological perspective that would best describe and understand this topic is the Symbolic Interactionism theory. This perspective works for the topic because it focuses on the subjective meanings people associate with their behaviors, actions, and interactions. In the context of addiction, the stigma is a socially constructed symbol that influences how society interacts with and perceives individuals suffering from addiction. This perspective will help in understanding the societal reactions and attitudes towards addiction and how they contribute to the stigma (Conerly et al., 2021).
