Tamara A. O’Neal SOC-326 Sociology of Deviant Behavior Module: Short Paper- Deviant Behaviors July 1, 2023 Deviant Behaviors When reviewing the hate map, I selected the state for which I live, Louisiana. I notice that there aren’t as many groups as some states like Texas, California, Florida, and North Caroline. In Louisiana there are seven Hate and Anti-government groups. The majority are statewide, two near major cities, and two groups located near rural areas. Among the seven hate and anti-government groups, One group is anti- LGBTQ+, three groups are racist organizations Neo Confederate and White Nationalist, one being and anti- Muslim group, and the other two are white supremacy groups, the remaining groups are anti- government. There are no religious based hate groups in Louisiana listed. There are more anti- government groups that any other hate and anti-government groups. I think this is because of a combination of historical, cultural, socioeconomic, and political factors. The unique history of the South, including the Civil War and Reconstruction era, has shaped a regional identity that often resists centralized government authority. Because of historical event that did not fall into the favor of the people, there has been a certain distrust between anti-government groups and the federal government. One event in particular was the pandemic, where all sorts of conspiracy theories surfaced including “ the federal government is secretly planning to round up citizens and place them in concentration camps run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.” (Southern Poverty Law Center, n.d.)
Does the information you gathered generally support the sociological notion that there are geographic and demographic deviance hot spots. Certain places with a lot of people and concentrated poverty can be hotspots for deviant behavior. Take Louisiana for instance, when it comes to not liking the government and having groups that oppose it, places with lots of people and concentrated poverty can make people feel frustrated and disconnected. This can lead to behaviors that go against the rules or resist government authority. These areas often face tough economic challenges that make people more likely to be against the government.
