Gaskins 2 Home and School: The Benefits of Parents' Engagement An interdependent relationship is when two or more parties can be independent but are intertwined (dependent), thus affecting one another. The relationship between the school, teachers, and parents can be considered interdependent because although each party can directly affect a child’s success in school, another party can either reinforce or weaken that effect. Thus, it is effective if all three parties work together to assist the child in their academic journey to achieve their full potential. The goal is to have a school-like family and vice versa; Joyce Epstein's model is a guide to assist teachers and schools in making a positive connection with families (Gestwicki 87). Joyce Epstein's model portrays six different involvements to obtain family-like schools and vice versa (Gestwicki 87). Epstein, a researcher on parent-school involvement, has studied and developed the idea of home-school connections that will reflect the importance of schools being involved in their children's learning activities at home, in the community, and engaging with parents (Gestwicki). Epstein’s model describes various ways to form a solid bond between the parties, which implicates diversity awareness, open communication, and appropriate decision-making that directly and indirectly affect the children enrolled in the school. Each factor, diversity awareness, open communication, and appropriate decision-making, has a significant role in how strong the connection between parents, teachers, and schools can become. Diversity awareness is more than understanding the different modern trends; it involves understanding the different types of family dynamics, socioeconomic status, educational background, and cultural background (religion, values, linguistics). Overall, the goal behind
Gaskins 3 diversity awareness is to gain the trust of the families. When the school and its teachers practice being open-minded and researching specific diversities they face in the classroom or school setting, the parents and students feel more welcome. The more the parents and students feel welcomed, the better the teachers can connect with the parents on a level of understanding with no judgments, leading to trust. When the students feel more welcomed and comfortable in the classroom and school setting, they can put trust in their teacher. According to City Year, an educational nonprofit that works alongside AmeriCorps has found that “trust and academic success go hand in hand” (Roper). “Relational trust has long been understood as an essential component of positive relationships in schools. When trust is present and thriving, students and teachers experience much more successful teaching and learning experiences” (Roper). A great way to build trust through diversity awareness between the school and its teachers and the students and their parents is to break down the present barriers. A prominent barrier that many schools and teachers face is a language barrier between the students and their parents. Such a challenge makes it difficult for the communication pathway, and many reports and studies suggest using a translator to break the barrier. LinkedIn suggests solutions to language barriers between physicians and their patients by using adaptive communication styles appropriate to the audience and cross-cultural communication models, such as the LEARN (listen, explain, acknowledge, recommend, negotiate), RESPECT (rapport, empathy, support, partnership, explanations, cultural competence, and trust) or BATHE (background, affect, trouble, handling, and empathy) models (LinkedIn). Although this is for the relationship between physicians and their patients, it is a parallel dynamic to the relationship between teachers and
