Report
Identify the roles that you see James, Dan, and Mary having in this family. James would be the problem child as he acts out in rebellious anti-social behaviors that influences the family dynamic by responding to his behaviors. James also reports using medication that is not prescribed to him to cope with the stressors of his family life. A common behavior among individuals who fill the problem child role in the addicted family system is substance use/misuse/abuse which James presents with. Mary would be the scapegoat of the family as her son’s substance use issues would be a result of the driving accident she was in with him. It can be deduced that she is to blame for the issues James experiences from her husband and from James himself. Mary also presents as someone with a substance use disorder seeing how she shows up to sessions intoxicated. Her own struggles with substance use would be another stressor for the family system she would receive blame for. Not much is said about Dan other than his name and that James does not speak to him. It is safe assumption that Dan is the enabler as nothing was mentioned about holding Mary and James accountable for their behavior and by doing so nothing is changing and their substance use and behaviors will only escalate. What Behaviors do you think are related to Mary’s drinking? James’ rebellious or oppositional behaviors probably cause Mary severe stress and uses substances to cope with her son’s behavior and the impact those behaviors have on the family system. What are the social, economic and physiological factors that James presents due to his addiction? James is taking pain medication not prescribed to him to cope with the stressors of his family life which indicate that he has to obtain those pills from someone somewhere. His social factors appear to be from associating with anti-social peers who have anti-social attitudes and personality traits. There is no indication that there are economic factors contributing to James’ substance use. James presents with bio-medical complaints with preexisting injuries sustained from car accident. Mary’s substance use also indicates that there is a family history of substance use in James’ genealogy indicating another significant factor for James to develop addiction.
