Problem set 5 Propose a sociological phenomena research question. How does social media usage impact adolescents' mental health and well-being? State the target population of interest indicated by this research question. How big is it? Would it be feasible to study every member? The target population for this research question would be adolescents aged between 13 and 19 who actively engage with social media platforms. The size of this population can vary depending on the geographic region. For example, the study focusing on all the adolescents who use social media nationwide would constitute over 20 million individuals. Therefore, it is not practical to study every member. Assuming your answer to the last question is “no,” identify which general sampling method would be most appropriate: probability or non-probability. Justify your choice. Given the large size of the adolescent population and the feasibility constraints of studying every member, a non-probability sampling method would be most appropriate. Non- probability sampling allows for greater flexibility in selecting participants and can be more practical for studying hard-to-reach populations like adolescents.
Which type of probability (simple random, systematic, stratified, cluster, or multi-stage) of non-probability (convenience, snowball, purposive or quota) do you plan to use and why? I plan to use purposive sampling. Purposive sampling allows researchers to select participants based on specific criteria relevant to the research question. In this case, I will select adolescents who are active social media users and represent diverse demographics and usage patterns. What is the difference between the target population and the sampling frame? The target population is the entire group of individuals that researchers are interested in studying. For example, in my case, I target all adolescents who use social media. In contrast, the sampling frame is the list or source from which the sample will be drawn. In this context, the sampling frame could be platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter, where I can identify and recruit participants from the larger target population.
