1.3 Assignment: To Be an Excellent Teacher Takeaway After reading chapter one of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, I learned that developmentally appropriate practice is one of the most important aspects of the early childhood profession. When we use this practice, this will help us to get to know our students better and to have a better understanding of how they learn. It will also help us to make better decisions as we look at curriculum for our students and to be able to teach a group of students or to the individual student. I really like how they talk about how we can be an excellent teacher and what it takes to be an excellent teacher. It made me think about if I am being intentional and what I need to do to become more intentional. It helped me to understand how to be intentional through the illustration of the five-pointed star that shows the five areas that will help me to be a better teacher. We need each of these areas to be successful as a teacher. If we leave just one out, we will be doing a disservice to our students. I am trying to develop a community of learners in my class. I know that each child is special and brings their own identity to the class. I know this helps each student to feel special and apart of the class. Over the years, I have worked on trying to use different teaching strategies with my class. I try to be aware of my students and how they learn. I try to see what works and what does not work and change to meet the needs of my students. I have always had trouble with curriculum. It is so hard to sometimes meet all the students needs when you use a set curriculum. I really like how in the text they talk about how students learn better when you have a well-planned curriculum. In reading the text, I know that I need to do better with using the curriculum. In preschool, we are continually assessing our students. I really feel that assessing the students does help you to know how the student is doing and to be able to help you plan your lessons. I also liked how the text brought out how important
relationships with families is. The family knows their child the best and can help us as teachers to develop plans for our students. I know this is something that I struggle with, but I understand how important these relationships are for our students. The text made realize that what we teach and how we teach does matter in teaching our students.
