LLS 316/PS 316 - FALL 2023 WEEKLY RESPONSE TEMPLATE NAME: Kiara Barragan WEEKLY MODULE (RESPONSE #): 10 CONTENT/MATERIALS: This Chicago Muralist is Empowering Latina and Queer Women CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK (CHECK ONE OR MORE): Imagined Communities/Cultural Systems (Anderson): X Grotesque/New Bodily Canon (Bakhtin): X Dirt/Anomaly (Douglas): ____ Cosmos/Landscape (Tuan): ____ Rasquachismo (Ybarra-Frausto) ____ FOCUS: 1 - Identify and explain how something--e.g., a word, idea, issue, question--that you found particularly interesting from this week's materials displays/embodies/fits into the defining characteristics of at least one of the conceptual frameworks we have used to analyze Latina/Latino politics. This week we watched the video of a muralist from Chicago who does murals and artwork with spray paint to help empower and inspire young girls within the community. Empowerment, inspiration and the overall representation through art, this form being graffiti murals relates to the grotesque because it's manipulation of something people consider beautiful. Women in all cultures their bodies are seen as scared, and this is mainly due to heavy Catholic and Christian influence within Latino communities. this artist in her paintings manipulates iconic figures, as she mentioned Frida khalo while also creating new images of women on murals around the city to give girls someone to look up to/ make it known they’re being seen. Additionally, in regards. To imagined communities, these murals create a sense of community of the women in the Latinx community to feel connected with one another through art. 2 - Make a conceptual connection with what you have identified and explained in part 1 of this response to something from a previous week's content. In recent weeks, there has been discussion surrounding Latinos, focusing on representation within the community. This discussion extends back to our initial week when we explored "foreigners in their own land," shedding light on how Spanish colonization reshaped Mexican territory and influenced the self-perception of individuals within those communities. This historical context is relevant to our current discussions, highlighting the internal struggle among Latinos in the United States. similar to this week, it is crucial to acknowledge the distinct
challenges faced by Latina women within the Latinx community, adding to the ongoing dialogue on representation and identity. 3 - Explain how your responses in parts 1 and 2 help you better understand recurrent symbolic meanings and cultural patterns in Latina/Latino political identity, expression, and/or action. This better helps me understand Latino politics and recurrent symbolic meanings and patterns within Latino political identity especially because there is a large influence of not only religion but machismo as well. women within Latinx communities are meant to feel like they are inferior to males which leads to women being less motivated to make a change. Especially in a city like Chicago where there is already a large wage gap, poverty, and lack of good education for Latinas and just overall individual's within the community. It honestly just goes to show how far we’ve come but also how much we as a community still need to develop in order to make sure everyone within the community feels heard and represented.
