Jared Remy was accused of killing his girlfriend, Jennifer Martel, in August 2013. Remy was on probation for domestic violence problems earlier when the committed the crime. The criminal justice system’s deficiencies in dealing with domestic violence was completely exposed. In my opinion, procedural law played a significant role in the conclusion of this case. First, as you indicated, Jared Remy was on probation at the time of the murder, and his previous history of domestic violence was not considered when calculating his bond. This may have contributed to his release on bail and subsequent murder. Furthermore, the victim's family did not receive appropriate help or protection from the criminal justice system, making them feel vulnerable and unprotected. I believe the judge in this case carries the greatest responsibility for the outcome. If the judge had considered Jared Remy's prior history of domestic violence and his probation status, he may have imposed stronger release terms or rejected bail outright. Furthermore, the judge may have taken steps to guarantee that the victim's family received appropriate care and protection. This may have included referring them to resources like victim advocates, social workers, and counselors. The judge was also responsible for ensuring that the victim's family received proper care and protection, which they did not. While we can't say for certain whether the family received these resources because this information isn't publicly available, we can say that the family felt vulnerable and unsupported, which is often a sign that these resources were not supplied.
