Brittney Hackett Wilczynski Text Learning Assignment #2 SPCE 680 Section 819
Chapter 6: Quality of Life, Generalization, and Social Validity In chapter 6, I learned that social validity is referred to as the extent to which the goals, procedures and outcomes of the intervention process are acceptable and meaningful to the client and stakeholders. This ensures that they are effective and improves quality of life, which is one of the main goals when working in the field of applied behavior analysis. There are four ways that measure quality of life. The first way is that the client has the kind of experiences that they prefer. The second way is when the client is interconnected with important people in their lives and their community. The third way quality of life is measured is when physical and social well being is improved within cultural environments that are relevant. The last way is essentially when target clients have experiences that are related and the same to all human beings and is valued by the target client. It is important to improve the quality of life not only for the target clients, but for the stakeholders and families as well. With behavioral services you can expect that quality of life will improve for both the client and families. Reducing behaviors and increasing social skills will not only be helpful for the client in real life situations, but it can also relieve stress on family members and caretakers of the individual. Another important thing that improves quality of life for both the client and families is generalization. It is important for the interventions used in ABA to be generalized in real world situations. If the client’s behaviors are only decreasing in center, then quality of life most likely will not be increased. A good way to enhance generalization is using pivotal response training. It can also be helpful for family members to be trained in PRT so they can practice it at home as well, to help increase generalization. As a behavior technician pursuing my degree in Applied Behavior Analysis, I implement these strategies and will continue to do so in my career as a BcBa. I use pivotal response training
daily as a technician. Further in my career I may be able to train stakeholders in PRT as well to help improve quality of life for both parties. I will also be responsible discussing family quality of life with stakeholders before completing treatment plans for clients, to ensure both the client and the client’s family is happy.
