Olivia Adams HUMS – 310 Homework Assignment 5 Nontraditional Families There exist several nontraditional family groups within the military that are worthy of consideration, such as stepfamilies, single service members and their families, same-sex military couples, and veterans (Hall, 2016). The stepfamily system is one of the nontraditional families found in the military, and it comprises several subsystems that can be challenging to define (Hall, 2016). These subsystems include divorced spouses, single parents and children, children and out-of-home parents, biological siblings, stepsiblings, new couples, and stepparents and stepchildren (Hall, 2016). The stepfamily system is a unique group with multiple components, and the number of individuals affected by the military varies significantly from family to family. The stepfamily system in the military faces additional challenges compared to traditional military members and civilians, as they may have to deal with state-mandated moves that separate children from one of their biological parents due to military orders of the service member who is the other biological parent (Hall, 2016). Additionally, suppose the service member who is the biological parent is deployed. In that case, the stepparent at home caring for the children must have legal documentation to make crucial decisions for them (Hall, 2016). Such documentation is necessary for the stepparent to register the child for school or extracurricular activities or consent to necessary medical care. Resentment can also be an issue in military stepfamilies, mainly if the stepparent is a military member and the children perceive that the family is forced to move and endure
hardships due to them (Hall, 2016). This can create additional issues between parents and even between the biological and stepparents with the children. The single service member and their families are another nontraditional family group that merits attention. This group involves the single parent and their children and the grandparents who often step in to help raise the children while the service member is deployed or in training (Hall, 2016). However, the grandparents also face their worries and anxieties about their children's safety while serving in the military and the well-being of their grandchildren (Hall, 2016). This family group also increases the risk of the service member experiencing difficulties as they may have heightened concerns about their children's care, which can lead to stress and other issues while they are away on duty. Another nontraditional family group that will be discussed is same-sex military couples. Although these couples face many of the same challenges that heterosexual couples face, such as issues with communication, substance abuse, physical abuse, and infidelity, they also face unique challenges, such as discrimination and lack of legal recognition in some states and countries (Hall, 2016). Despite these challenges, same-sex military couples have gained legal recognition and access to benefits, which has helped to mitigate some of the difficulties they face. The military has also promoted inclusivity and respect for all service members, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The final group to be discussed is the nontraditional veterans. When veterans leave the military, they often face unique challenges adjusting to civilian life. This can impact their nontraditional family group as well. For instance, they may experience physical or mental health issues or face difficulty in finding employment, which can put a strain on their relationships with their spouse/partner and children. Moreover, transitioning from a structured and regimented
