EDU 280 M5 Article Three Christine Mims 1. What is the main focus of the article? The main focus of this article is to address the practices as race-related teaching practices (RRPT). The need for these practices by offering categories for thinking about RRTP and suggest ways teachers can use children’s literature to welcome related conversations. Showing children that we see and value all aspects of them including attributes related to race and culture. Helping the children to feel welcome and connected to their teachers and peers. Recognizing that the color-blind approach which does not directly talk about race or race-related experiences. Can send a negative message to children of color that their teachers do not recognize or feel comfortable acknowledging a salient and influential part of their identity. Using children’s literature as a vehicle that can generate these conversations about race- related experiences. Part of a larger effort to address race in teaching practices which challenges teachers to reconsider what is good teaching. 2. What are three strategies that are discussed in the article? The three strategies that are discussed in the article are RRSPs color-blind; color-aware and social justice approaches. The first strategy is the color-blind approach which is ineffective but common and potentially harmful. Teachers do not directly talk about race with the children. The absence of an intentional message about race sends a powerful message itself. The next strategy is color-aware approach which is to intentionally teach the children about race and explain to them that we see and value their race because it is an important part of who they are. The last strategy is the social justice approach; it empowers children to play a role in acting against discrimination. Teachers help children to learn how to actively recognize and act on race- related injustices. 3. How will you implement the strategies/ideas (from the article) when working with children? ( here is where you give specific examples of how you will use the strategies) Implementing these strategies from the article when working with children that can be done because most teachers do the first strategy. I would avoid the color-blind approach by implementing racially relevant children’s literature. Books in which children see and savor images and representations similar to their own lives and experiences. Implementing the next strategy of color- awareness would be to bring up direct and positive ways to address race- related experiences. Taking advantage of teachable moments and responding to children’s race-related questions and interactions with books and activities to advance the conversation. The last strategy to implement would be the social justice approach by seeking out teachable moments that specifically
