Running Head: WEEK 3 1 Topics 1 and 2 Caitlin Roeder Profesor Sandy Visser-Jones Topic 1: Effective teaching: What is effective teaching? What characteristics do students bring to learning situations? Evaluate factors that both positively and negatively influence the socialization of the child. Be sure to support your discussion with textbook materials. Effective teaching I believe is someone who is passionate about what they are teaching and loves what they teach. If you have a teacher that loves teaching music and is super excited to be teaching it, the kids are more than likely to be excited to attend the class everyday and learn what they need to learn. If the teachers make their subject exciting to learn or are thrilled to teach it, like with this class, more students will be thrilled to learn more about it then just taking the class because 1. They either have to take it or 2. Because they think it will be an easy class. I also think that the relationship has with the students is quite important as well because without the relationship, most students don’t respect their teachers or care for what they are learning. According to Berns (2016) stated “The teacher-student relationship forms a different social experience for each child and, therefore, leads to different developmental outcomes” (p. 241). The characteristics students bring to learning situations I believe is different for every student. We have students who will ask a lot of questions, students who won’t talk at all, students who won’t listen and some that will. Every situation will lead a teacher to teach differently, lose their minds and more. Hilliard (1992), C. C. Park (2001), Tharp (1989) discussed that “Suggest that children develop learning or cognitive styles based on the socialization they receive in their
WEEK 3 2 families and peer groups- although there are still many unanswered questions about cognitive styles” (as cited in Berns 2016, p. 253). Topic 2: Differences: -Discuss how your socialization was affected by your ethnicity? Did you encounter any differences between your home expectations and those of your schools? Teachers? Peers? How were these differences handled, if at all? -Critique strategies that support and empower you and your family through respectful, reciprocal relationships in your development and learning. Be sure to include in-text citations from the textbook to support your discussion. I personally don’t believe my socialization was affected by my ethnicity. Yes, I consider myself low class but I think that, that has made me want to work harder for the things I want and need in life. I’m not part of anything cultural related so I feel that this question doesn’t really suit me. At home, I was pushed to do my best in school but as soon as I graduated high school, me going to college wasn’t important in the slightest and was just told that I need to get a job and that was that. At school, teachers push me to do good and believe in me, even without knowing me. They try to help me manage my time better, listen to me with any issues I’m having and are understanding. My friends will push me but a lot just don’t understand what I’m trying to do in life as well and just want to party all the time. I don’t think I handled these situations differently, I’ve always managed to push myself harder and further even when I was doubted and still am doubted. I think it’s all about mindset and that’s what keeps me going in the end.
