Case Study 1. In the case shown in this video, what impact do this clients culture and ethniticity have? Stella is a drug addict in recovery supposedly, so she’s around a lot of different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. She probably lives in run down housing in dangerous neighborhoods. 2. What are three issues from the NOHS Ethnical Standards that apply to this case? STANDARD 3 Human service professionals protect the client's right to privacy and confidentiality except when such confidentiality would cause serious harm to the client or others, when agency guidelines state otherwise, or under other stated conditions (e.g., local, state, or federal laws). Human service professionals inform clients of the limits of confidentiality prior to the onset of the helping relationship. STANDARD 4 If it is suspected that danger or harm may occur to the client or to others as a result of a client's behavior, the human service professional acts in an appropriate and professional manner to protect the safety of those individuals. This may involve, but is not limited to, seeking consultation, supervision, and/or breaking the confidentiality of the relationship. STANDARD 11 Human service professionals are knowledgeable about their cultures and communities within which they practice. They are aware of multiculturalism in society and its impact on the community as well as individuals within the community. They respect the cultures and beliefs of individuals and groups. I would explain to the client the very importance of these three ethical standards by telling them that standard 3 is important for their safety, it’s one thing not to repeat anything that is said to you as a human service worker but if there is any thought that you will harm yourself or others it has to be repeated to the
correct officials. Standard 4 is important because Stella is still actively using drugs, she’s putting her life at danger. Standard 11 is important because human service workers should always be aware of their cultural surroundings, so everyone gets treated equally. 3. Explain the importance of confidentiality with this client: I would say confidentiality is very important because it helps foster an environment of open and honest communication between patients and their therapist and it plays a major role in defining the communication and trust between counselor and client. 4. Explain how “Client Autonomy” applies in this case: Client Autonomy applies in this case because it is a core value of social work. Promoting client autonomy can enhance their self- determination, empowerment, dignity, and well-being. Since Stella had relapsed and told the counselor she was struggling very hard with the incident, if she felt a bit stronger about client autonomy she may have been able to tell someone she relapsed and went straight back to rehab. 5. Explain how human services workers reliability for the client and responsibility to the process of assisting the client contribute to this case: The human services worker has a huge responsibility for this client and the whole situation. If she has been the human services worker the whole three years there’s been a case open then she should be aware of everything going on, not only in Rita’s life but also Stella’s life also. 6. Process your own reaction to this case and how you would sort out the way to respond appropriately: When it came to this case study it hit very close to home. I was completely standing side by side with this case all the way until Stella told Paula she had relapsed but then also tried to blame letting her ex spend the night be the reason she relapsed. Coming from someone who was in active addiction for more than twenty years, I’ve used all the excuses. Being clean the last six years is the best decision I ever made. I think it’s very wrong that Stella practically begged Paula to lie to the judge for her so she could keep her one unsupervised visit she was getting to spend with her daughter a month. I think what was even worse was that the human service worker considered doing it. I would have came right out and told Stella, No! I wasn’t going to lie for her. Stella does not need unsupervised visits with Rita, it’s too unsafe.
