1 How Society Works SOC-FPX1150 Capella University Hannah Halstead September 2023
2 Current Issue In today’s society, there are many challenges or issues for human resource professionals. One current issue in the human resource field right now is the need for flexibility in the workplace, or greater autonomy. While it is possible to make this work at some organizations, and it can be considered a good thing for mental health, job satisfaction, and employee well- being, many still have not been able to implement it, and it can cause problems during or after hiring a candidate. Implementing schedule flexibility or autonomy is not possible everywhere and the organizations that require employees to be on site struggle the most with this issue. This may be one of the biggest obstacles currently, because many employees are beginning to prioritize their mental health and demand more freedom in the workplace. Or, sometimes people require more autonomy for family and childcare issues. Whatever reason, this issue is making hiring the right candidates extremely challenging for employers due to different ideas on what work schedules should and do look like. Individual Personal Problem This can be viewed as a personal issue at times. When an employee is not offered flexibility or autonomy in their work schedule, it can lead to them calling off excessively or being late or leaving early too often. If a boss is not understanding, they could consider this worker lazy, irresponsible, or unmotivated. Older generations think that the younger generations have little work ethic because of their need for flexibility and fail to consider external factors that may affect their abilities. It could also be seen as someone who has poor time management skills. Finally, it can also portray a lack of loyalty to a company to some employees and make them feel negatively towards the person.
3 Sociological Imagination C. Wright Mills was the first person to use the phrase sociological imagination. It is defined as, “the ability to see the societal patterns that influence the individual as well as groups of individuals.” (Andersen, 2019). Basically, it means looking at a problem as a whole rather than just a personal problem and questioning whether there is something larger going on in society that causes the problem to exist. One reason that job autonomy may be an issue from a sociological perspective is that the price of childcare has increased tremendously. Maybe parents are only able to work while their child is in school, which would require a very specific schedule. Or they must work the opposite shift as their spouse, which could also be challenging for some organizations to accommodate. An employee may have a child with a disability, or a family member struggling with a serious illness, and they need to be home at certain times to help them with day-to-day tasks or to make sure they take their medication. This issue could also be connected to another larger societal cause. Employees who require irregular schedules may face income irregularity, income insecurity, and often have less time for care-giving activities. Many times, people with these needs and problems have low- income, and require government assistance. Since they are unable to work full-time, regular hours, or often lose their job for attendance reasons, they have a poor work history which means they have a harder time finding new jobs. They may face food insecurity at that point, and struggle to pay their bills as well. The Impact on HR This issue can be extremely frustrating to human resources professionals, especially if they believe they have found a great candidate. When employees call off or show up late it can
