1. Identify at least two human rights issues presented. How were these human rights violated? (100-200 words) The human right issue presented was suffering domestic violence. According to the UDHR (1948), the human right that was violated in this case of domestic violence was the right to life, liberty and personal security listed in article 3. Also, her human right of freedom from torture and degrading treatment listed in article 5 was also violated. The speaker lived in a physical and emotional abusive relationship with her boyfriend. She was living in constant fear and torture. Her human right to a dignified life filled with security and free from any torture was violated when her boyfriend knocked her down and she hit her head. Also, her human right of freedom and liberty was threatened when she was ready to leave her boyfriend and he threatened her to not leave him by slitting his wrists. At this point, the speaker felt like she had lost control over her life and constantly worried about her security. United Nations. (1948). Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Briefly describe the intersectionality of the main character. Specifically address the social identities and social locations. (100-200 words) The main character is a young black woman. These social identities and social locations are important to note because it could better help understand the main character and their positionality and how this may impact their power and access to resources. According to Crenshaw (1991), “black women are less likely to report their rapes, less likely to have their cases come to trail, less likely to have their trials result in convictions, and most disturbing, less likely to seek counseling and other support services” (p.11). The main character endured the physical and emotional abuse for a long period of time until she finally was able to confide in her best friend when things got out of hand. She did not mention confiding in the authorities or any support services. Crenshaw reinforces the fact of how many black women, like the main character, are not open about attacks on them. Perhaps the main character felt like her voice was not going to be heard and that her trail would be another that does not result in conviction. Having some knowledge on her social identities and social locations helps build a better understanding of what she may have been experiencing and how to better help her as well. Crenshaw, K. (1991). Provide your rationale. (100-200 words) The main social justice issue is domestic violence. The state and government have failed in keep all humans safe, specifically black women. The main character did not know any of the warnings sings of being in an abusive relationship and did not contact any support services when things got out of hand either. There is a lack of education and access to resources for women, especially
black women when it comes to domestic violence. As our human right to live a dignified life filled with liberty and security, it is hard to do when we do not know what domestic violence is or where to go to when we are experiencing it. It is the government and state’s responsibility to keep us safe and to positively intervene in both preventing and responding to domestic violence. Domestic violence is not just an individual or a family issue, it is a social justice issue. Develop a rights based and justice informed social work intervention for at least one of the presenting issues viewed in the video. Specify in your response whether the intervention proposed is at the micro, mezzo or macro level and why. (150-250 words) One of the presenting issues viewed in the video was domestic violence. If I were to create a mezzo level rights based and justice informed social work intervention, it would include organizing domestic violence informational groups in the community. Many women do not know the warning signs when experiencing domestic violence. There is not enough information and awareness on the issue. I would involve the participation of survivors of domestic violence to tell their story and inform the community on the warning signs. This would be a setting where the women have a voice, and they can run the group at their pace and at their desire. This would also be a place that offer support services. Women who are experiencing domestic violence would know who to call or where to go to. This community group would work with shelters to help re-locate these women who are leaving an abusive home and do not know where to go. This community group would help women with resources, so they are not afraid to leave their abusive homes. 2. Identify at least two human rights issues presented. How were these human rights violated? (100-200 words) The human right issue that was presented was the main character and his family growing up in inadequate living standards. According to the UDHR (1948), this is a violation of article 25, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control”. The main character had grown up with his family not having the security of food, clothing, housing, medical care and necessary social services when his father passed away. His mother was unable to get a job to provide for her family. His family was not provided with the adequate resources to maintain an adequate living standard. Another human right issue that was presented was being given a 45-year sentence for a parole violation. According to the UDHR (1948), this is a violation of article 11 which states, “Nor shall a heavier penalty be imposed than the one that was applicable at the time the penal offence was committed”. The main character should have received a fair sentence for his parole violation. However, the justice system failed him and gave him a heavier penalty. United Nations. (1948). (100-200 words) The main character is a Latino male who is part of a poor socioeconomic status. These social identities and social locations are important to note because it could better help understand the main character and their positionality and how this may impact their power and access to resources. According to Bannan (2019), “it is harder than ever to organize workers, negotiate workplace conditions, monitor and enforce dignified workplace conditions and ensure the minimal guarantees for worker protections. This is especially true for low-wage workers whose labor has historically been exploited, namely people of color, immigrants, and women” (p.5). As the main character explained, it was not easy finding the right employment to sustain a family of 9 children. His mother and him did not have access to adequate job opportunities. It was clear to see in the video that depending on one’s social identities and social locations will define one’s job opportunities. Bannan N.L.O. (2019). (100- 200 words) The main economic justice issue raised in this video is poverty. According to Navaro (2016), “Inequality in the United States and most other developed nations has risen significantly since the 1980s” (p.10). There is an issue in the United States with inequality when it comes to economics. The United States favors the wealthy and neglects the poor. They focus more on how to get the rich richer rather than focusing on how to get the poor out of poverty. Poverty was a huge contributor to what brought the main character to choose drugs and violence. The main character and his family fell into poverty when his father passed away and there was no longer any steady income. They had the lost the breadwinner of the family. The mother did not have any job experience and all the other kids were too young to work. He was anxious to find a job to help support his family. However, living in poverty did not make it any easier. For the main character to provide for his family he was left with no choice but to choose the only job that was accessible to him and brought a higher income, which was selling drugs on the street.
