Diversity Activity Anitra McKnight Masters of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6051: Diversity, Human Rights, and Social Justice Dr. Katrice Byrd February 2nd, 2024
Conduct an Interview-Population-Transgender -Explain how the activity has influenced your understanding, bias, or comfort level in working with the identified population. I actually interviewed a transgender that is currently serving in the United States Army. Her name is Tammy. Tammy was born a man but has had what is called “bottom surgery”. I work on Fort Moore and with the type of work that I do, we support customers all day, every day. After interviewing Tammy, I got a better understanding of the everyday life of how Tammy lives. I won’t really say that I was bias against this population, I just looked at it like I can’t be the judge of how a person live their life. I will say that I was a little uncomfortable to have an interview. I didn’t know if the questions that I asked would be uncomfortable for Tammy, let alone myself.
Diversity and Difference - More generally, explain how the activity has influenced your perceptions of diversity and difference • As a social worker, I have learned that with this activity, you have to meet people where they are. I learned that diversity is what makes us all unique. We come from different socio-economic backgrounds, different communities, different religious backgrounds and different sexual orientations. • When you celebrate diversity, you can appreciate the differences that we all have. When diversity is involved, it allows one to experience different beliefs and perspectives from one another.
