Module Seven Question 1 Approach the clips you have seen from a social scientific perspective. What aspects of art therapy would interest a professional in each of the following fields? Psychology : A psychologist would mainly focus on how art therapy can help release stress, deal with anxiety, and help with depression. Sociology : A sociologist primary focus on this would be be how art therapy can bring people together within cultures and organizations. Anthropology : An anthropologist primary focus would be on how art therapy has changed throughout the years within cultures. Module Seven Question 2 Use the social science perspective to propose a few explanations as to why you might find graffiti in a society. Choose a social science principle (norms, roles, institutions, and beliefs and values) and describe how these might influence the appearance of graffiti in a society. Describe how the appearance of graffiti in a society might influence the people living there. It honestly all comes down to the area, in some places it's looked upon as vandalism and other places it's looked upon as art. In America, I would definitely say that it depends on the area, I feel that more urban areas are acceptable of graffiti art while more suburban areas look at it as vandalism. In certain situations within a society, graffiti is used as a form of expression because the individuals might feel that graffiti is the only way they can be heard in regards to social issues. When we look at social norms people think areas that have graffiti are low value areas without looking at the art as an expression. Just looking at the situation with Chris Brown for example, he moved to a rich neighborhood and decided that he wanted to do graffiti art on his property to his house to express his self and the neighbors were complaining to the police regarding someone that he did to HIS property because they feel like it lessen the values of their property since they were near it. I don't believe that should be the case but with graffiti typically being shown and displayed in urban, low-income areas, society made it a norm to be associated with low value. Module Seven Question 3 Channel your thought process before taking this course and before adopting a social science perspective. Through what type of lens would you have viewed graffiti before taking this course? How would this have influenced how you thought about graffiti? How do these two reactions compare? Has your understanding of social science principles changed the way you perceive graffiti in society? If so, how?
If your perspective on a different issue (other than graffiti) has changed after adopting the social science perspective, feel free to write about this issue instead! I honestly never saw an issue with graffiti. I don't see too much of it where I'm from but you will see it every now and then on trains that may go through from time to time. I always thought it was impressive most of the graffiti, at least most of it that on the more artistic side and not the graffiti that's just a name. I believe that people that do graffiti art are extremely talented and brave to scale those type of building just to express your art to the world for free. I know it is considered vandalism to some groups of people and I understand why, but I honestly like a lot of it and if it's done by a talented person, I feel like it brings value instead of depreciating.
