Hello everyone, I am Ryan. I am in my mid-thirties, I live in North Carolina, and I have five children ranging from ten years old to two months. My major in Psychology focusing on mental health. Statistics is necessary to being and effective citizen for two reasons, we live in a data driven world and those who understand and respond effectively to the data will be successful. Everyday people, corporations, and countries make decisions based on the data that they have available to them. These decisions are just small pieces of even more data that is then compiled into various different ways and then presented to us and everyone else. But what we do with this data once it is presented is what makes us successful or not. “If we can create and sustain stat labs comprised of well-trained statisticians and data scientists who can move between theory and practice to apply statistics to solve problems and make decisions , and if they can collaborate with development actors empowered to produce data and take action on development issues, then the members of the stat labs can transform data into evidence to answer their collaborators’ research questions or help them make data-driven policy decisions that will lead to development impacts and benefits to society.” (Ojo, Osinubi, & Forlorunso, 2022) Though this is an excerpt from a book that covers the use of statistics to assist in the building up of developing countries, the thoughts here can be applied in our own lives from the individual to the organizational level. Just like in Kahneman’s book our “…purpose when it comes to the use of statistics and data should be to identify and understand errors of judgment” (Kahneman, 2012) Our nation as well as the world is full of examples directly associated to “errors of judgment” from social justice issues stretching back to the beginning of recorded history all the way to more recent examples. Whether involving a decision in a city or the decision of a nation, if we can identify and understand why these errors occurred, then perhaps we can improve our own lives and the lives of those around us as citizens and then begin building a better nation. If we choose to disregard this data and the story that it tells us, then we will be left behind as the rest of the world trudges onward. Ojo, O. O., Osinubi, T. T., & Folorunso, S. A.
