For this Discussion, you will evaluate the purpose statements in assigned journal articles in your discipline and consider the alignment of theory, problem, and purpose. You will also explain your position on the relationship between research and social change. Alignment means a research study has clear and logical connections among its components. To achieve these connections, researchers must carefully craft the components of their research so that there is a coherent interrelationship when they are viewed together. As you read the authors’ purpose statements, consider how well the study's intent and connection to the problem and theoretical framework are presented. Also, consider if the purpose statement reveals the study’s potential for engendering positive social change. As you know, social change is a distinguishing feature of Walden University’s mission. Positive social change implies a transformation that results in positive outcomes. This can happen at many levels (e.g., individual, family systems, neighborhoods, organizations, nationally and globally), and positive social change can occur at different rates: slow, gradual, fast, and radical. With these thoughts in mind, refer to the  Journal Articles  document for your assigned articles for this Discussion. You will switch your journal article assignment from Week 3. If your last name starts with A through L, use Article B. If your last name begins with M through Z, use Article A. Follow the prompt below for your program. Post  a critique of the research study in which you: Evaluate the purpose statement. The  Purpose Statement Checklist  serves as a guide for your evaluation. Please do not respond to the checklist in a Yes/No format when writing your Discussion post. Analyze alignment among the theory, research problem, and purpose. Explain your position on the relationship between research and social change. Support your Main Issue Post and Response Post concerning the week’s Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA Style.
Evaluate the Purpose Statement The study design, theoretical backdrop, goal, variables or phenomena, participants, and location are all specified in the purpose statement (Burkholder et al., 2020). Wilhelmy, Kleinmann, Konig, Melchers, and Truxillo (2016) conducted a qualitative research study on How and Why Interviewers Try to Make Impressions on Applications. A Qualitative Study. This study aims to identify and analyze the wide variety of potential interviewer IM intents, actions, and intended results to develop a taxonomy and conceptual model using a qualitative method. The researchers utilize this conceptual model to highlight further interviewer messaging study ideas. This study uses the interdependence theory to clarify the similarities and differences between interviewer and applicant IM. Wilhelmy et al.'s (2016) purpose statement included signaling words to create clarity and logic, connect their ideas, and emphasize the key points. The purpose statement aligns with the recognized problem of comprehending the rationale for investigating and analyzing the conduct displayed by interviewers throughout their encounters with applicants. However, no site is identified in the purpose statement. This qualitative study shows the central phenomenon of signaling behaviors exhibited in interviewers. There is nondirectional language, and “to create” is an action verb. Analyze alignment among the theory, research problem, and purpose. The research problem is an idea that should be studied. Theories have four purposes for research: describing, explaining, predicting, and challenging phenomena. Describing theories describes concepts involving phenomena and the correlation between those concepts. Explaining theory answers questions about why the phenomenon occurs. Predicting theory elaborates on the explanation by focusing on forthcoming events—lastly, the phenomena theory is challenged to change or control situations. There are two ways theories may be applied in research. Initially, theories serve as a roadmap for the whole research process, from formulating research questions to analyzing the results. Secondly, the study might function as an assessment of the theory, assessing the ideas and examining the connections among them to evaluate the suitability of the theory (Burkholder et al., 2020). According to Babbie (2007), research has three purposes: exploration, description, and explanation. Exploration's purpose is to explore a topic of new interest or when the subject of a study is relatively new. The purpose of a description is to describe situations and events. Researchers observe phenomena thoroughly and then proceed to   explain   what they have witnessed. Due to scientific observation's careful and deliberate nature, the resulting descriptions tend to be   more accurate and precise   than casual observations. Explanation purpose is to explain things. Descriptive studies answer questions about what, when, where, and how. Explanatory studies focus on answering the why. Adequate research builds upon its theory, purpose, and research problem. By selecting a theory that falls short in a particular area of interest, a researcher might formulate a research question that will challenge the existing theory and its limitations, thus creating a goal for the study. Explain your position on the relationship between research and social change.
