2 ACES: THE HERNANDEZ FAMILY I learned about the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study conducted by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Kaiser Permanente, which explores the link between childhood maltreatment and long-term health outcomes. The study found that childhood maltreatment can lead to various adverse health outcomes later in life. According to my reading, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can hinder children's social, emotional, and cognitive development, disrupting their growth. Exposure to traumatic experiences can significantly impact children's mental well-being, leaving them vulnerable to adopting risky behaviors as coping mechanisms to manage the impact of the traumas they have endured (CDC, 2023). I used the ACE assessment tool to revisit my interview with the Hernandez family and identified critical observations regarding the children. This tool is useful when exploring someone's background in terms of any abuse, neglect, family dysfunction, or mental illness. The study highlighted the importance of early intervention and prevention efforts to lessen the effect of childhood trauma on individuals and society. Based on the identified ACEs, what plans would you make for working with this family? In evaluating the Hernandez family, I recommend ways to ensure they have a good start and receive the support they need. Firstly, I suggest providing home visits to assess their living situation, identify potential safety concerns, and provide guidance on creating a safe and healthy environment for the family.  Secondly, it would be helpful to offer parenting skills and healthy relationship approaches to help the parents develop a positive and nurturing relationship with Alberto and
3 Juan Jr. This can include training in effective communication, positive discipline techniques, and building healthy boundaries.  Thirdly, cognitive-behavioral therapy can be provided to help all members of the Hernandez family manage any emotional or behavioral challenges they may be experiencing. This can include anxiety, depression, anger management, and stress management.  Finally, providing resources for employment and childcare is crucial to help the family balance a flexible work schedule and family responsibilities. This can include childcare vouchers or subsidies, information on childcare providers, and support for children with special needs. Implementing these recommendations can provide the Hernandez family with the necessary support and resources to thrive, alleviate stress on parents, and enable a balance between work and family life. Policies that strengthen household financial security, such as tax credits, childcare subsidies, other forms of temporary assistance, and livable wages, as well as family- friendly work policies, including paid leave and flexible and consistent work schedules, can prevent ACEs by increasing economic stability and family income, improving maternal employment, and enabling parents to meet their children's basic needs and obtain high-quality childcare (CDC, 2023).  How would you administer the ACEs assessment in this case or other cases involving young children? In any client-worker relationship, it is crucial to approach administering the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) assessment to the family to establish a sound rapport and build a trusting relationship. This establishes an environment that allows the family to feel comfortable and secure, ultimately encouraging them to disclose pertinent information. Building a trusting
