CITY OF GREENVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM DATE: November 19, 2023 TO: The Mayor of Greenville FROM: Markisha Paul RE: Criminological Support Role I will be providing the support of a criminologist to the Greenville Police Department. The main objective of this initiative by the Greenville Police Department is to use data and theory to help guide their decision regarding how property crimes are addressed in the city and determine the best course of action for their department. The purpose of this memorandum is to provide an overview of what my roles and responsibilities will be while providing criminological support to Greenville. When it relates to criminology it is the study of crime and criminal behavior, informed by principles of sociology and non- legal fields, that’s includes psychology, economics, statistics, and anthropology ( What is criminology? the study of crime and criminal minds 2023) . When a person is a criminologist, they examine various areas such as characteristics of people who commit crimes, reasons why people commit crimes, effects of crimes on individuals and communities, and methods for presenting crime ( What is criminology? the study of crime and criminal minds 2023) . The reason behind employing a criminologist within the Greenville Department would be helpful to the city and their expertise in reducing crime within the city. The estimated percentage of crime is currently up 5.7% in murder, illicit drug 27.1% and property crime 62.7% in Greenville (Case Study), due the criminologist collecting data and statistics, evaluating criminals by using significant factors to analyze and find the cause of the problems such as biographical, social, and psychological. Along with this information I will be able to determine the pattern and provide resources/ methods to reduce criminal activities from youth up until adulthood. To develop ways to reduce the crime in Greenville, I will be working closely with the chief of the department, John Todt. We will also start collaborating with Captain Mike Bixbey, Deputy Chief Susan Flores on projects in order to get the city back in the right direction to reduce crime. Also, while we will have access to all information as it relates to all types of crime, we will be able to do hot-spot mapping that will help provide security by law enforcement to those high crime areas.
