How do an individual's experiences in Bronfenbrenner's macrosystem impact their views on or practices surrounding death? According to Bronfenbrenner's Ecological System Theory, the macrosystem can impact an individual's view and practices about death. Bronfenbrenner's macrosystem is " a larger cultural or societal context"; divided into "microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem"(Sigelman, 2017). The macrosystem "includes a society's cultural values, laws, political and economic systems, and institutions"(Sigelman, 2017). It affects the view of the individual depending on how the individual grew up and the society he lives. Some cultures see death as a transition and celebrate it; others as the end of life, just mourning the person and their life. The microsystem is the first experience of an individual. It forges his younger years; this can have a lasting effect on a child—his first experience with face-to-face interactions, usually with their parents (Sigelman, 2017). Parents have a significant influence on children, and if they all live in the same culture or society, these will be the only influences the child will have. It will set a path in the child's life unless they begin having other mesosystem and exosystem experiences. In the mesosystem, the individual can have "interrelationships between two or more microsystems" (Sigelman, 2017). The exosystem of the individual " involves social settings that individuals do not experience directly but that can still influence their development"(Sigelman, 2017). All of this influence the individual and his approach to any topic, especially death. Choose two cultures to compare (not necessarily from the article) and describe their views on death. How do they differ? How are they similar? The Christian view of death is sad, and at the end of life in this world, the soul of the person transition to heaven. Christianity's death celebration is tragic, crying, suffering, and mourning the person for days and maybe years. They have a solemn service with Christian hymns and a church celebration. In New Orleans, there is another way to celebrate death. The service at church, take the streets and walk to the cemetery. They do a Jazz Funeral, which is usually for musicians; however, anyone who requests can have one. They have a brass band that plays music to the cemetery and back. They do mourn, but they do with music celebrating the person's life. Very respectfully, anyone can join them in the celebration (The jazz funeral, n.d.). How does Bronfenbrenner's ecological model apply to any of the following programmatic themes? Bronfenbrenner's Ecological model can apply to Ethics and Emotional Intelligence. In the macrosystem, the individual exposure to different experiences will provide him with life, school, and work values. It will give the individual rules and norms to follow, which apply to ethics. By interacting in the macrosystem, the individual will develop self-awareness, self-regulation, ethical judgment, empathy, social awareness, and conflict resolution, all of which apply to Emotional Intelligence. The individual will acquire this by navigating the macrosystem. It will begin with the exposure at home, and as he grows, the exposure to the environment and the different interactions and experiences the individual will have.
