Describe the importance of confidentiality when working with a client. How does the principle of confidentiality impact the therapeutic alliance? Then, explain your understanding of mandated reporting and how it empowers vulnerable populations. Since it promotes rapport-building, confidentiality between the customer and the professional is essential. The National Association of Social Workers (2021) states that, unless there are urgent professional needs, social workers should maintain the confidentiality of all information they learn when providing professional services. The efficacy of the services provided depends on confidentiality. As social workers, our main objective is to make sure that our clients are safe and to reassure them that they are in good hands while they are with us. It makes sense that clients' willingness to divulge private and sensitive information about their life is influenced by their confidence that their social worker won't share it with third parties without authorization. (Reamer (2016) Because breaching client confidentiality would mean violating our clients' rights, it is imperative that social workers respect their ethical duties in this regard. Reamer (2016) states that modern social workers understand that there are numerous exceptions to clients' rights to secrecy, and that confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in all cases. Confidential information may occasionally need to be disclosed because to widely recognized exclusions relating to the protection of third parties (such as the requirement to report child or elder abuse or neglect) and client threats to harm themselves. Professionals can report and speak up for vulnerable groups whose members we suspect of being abused or neglected thanks to mandated reporting. The majority of victims in vulnerable populations are afraid to speak up, but reporters give them a secure space to speak out about abuse or neglect, which empowers victims.
