How might social work research inform dialogue on efforts to reform the immigration system? According to Jansson (2020), the United States is built on immigrants aside from Native Americans. This country has the greatest number of immigrants compared to other countries, with an estimated 38.5 million individuals born outside the country. Many of those individuals come to the United States in search of a better financial future, while others are pushed away from their countries by wars, violations of human rights, and domestic violence, among other factors. Social work research informs dialogue on efforts to reform immigration systems by being informed about the constantly changing laws and keeping track of how they negatively impact those who would benefit from them. Social workers can run for a government position, advocate for change, and utilize their knowledge to advocate for equity and inclusion. Social workers can use their research to advocate for change and educate those negatively impacted. Since there are many immigrants who their employers abuse due to the lack of knowledge of their rights, and other times; the individuals are afraid to speak up due to fear of deportation.
