How might social work research inform dialogue on efforts to reform the immigration system? The National Association of Social Workers recognizes that immigrants and refugees face unique challenges due to immigration policies. Legal and social statutes of migrants impact social service provision and community well being in the United States. The relationship is between social service and legislation in the 2015 policy statement. The NASW policy points to long standing economic and national security debates. Previously, social workers capacity to assist clients was constrained by immigration policies, limitation of family visitation and family reunification. Research is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of practice in which social workers engage in programs they implement. Social work develops in dialogue through relationship building, empathy and perspective taking, active listening, communication, affirmative inquiries and applying to social justice lenses. Dialogues offer a set of skills in engaging with others around controversial topics. The goal is to better understand both and others through an informed exchange of ideas and beliefs based on mutual respect and tolerance.
