1. What are the current trends in violent and property crime (compared to those from 10, 20, and thirty years ago) at the city, state, and national level, and what effect do you think the COVID-19 pandemic had on these types of crime in the US? How do you know?” The current trends in violent and property crime in Lafayette, Louisiana, the state of Louisiana, and the United States have significantly fluctuated throughout the years. However, there has been a decline in all three city, states, and nations from 30 years ago. In Lafayette, Louisiana, the crime rate in 2022 was 582, and the crime rate in 1992 was 874. In Louisiana, the crime rate in 2022 was 628.8, and in 1992, the crime rate was 984.6. In the United States, the crime rate in 2022 was 380.7, and the crime rate in 1992 was 757.7. I find it interesting that in Lafayette and Louisiana, the crime rate jumped from 2005 to 2006 when Katrina occurred. When Katrina occurred, it dispersed and relocated many people from the areas affected by the hurricane and the New Orleans area affected by the levees failing to Lafayette and other surrounding cities that were not as affected by the hurricane. This hurricane resulted in people losing everything: homes, jobs, loved ones, cars, belongings, etc. The extreme stress, financial burden, and relocation were all factors in Louisiana's mean total crime rate rise. The crime rates for violent and property crimes increased. However, I specifically found it interesting that the murder rate (7.08 per 100,000 compared to 3.26) increased the most significantly out of the different types of crime. The effects that the COVID-19 pandemic had on these types of crime in the US are similar to when Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005. COVID-19 left many people unemployed in health crises, people lost their loved ones, and many were enraged with the political aspects/issues that COVID-19 brought on. This was a time of emotional and financial turmoil. A lot of the crime that increased during Covid-19 was property crime. This aligns with people being unable to afford what they need and having too much time on their hands. Another aspect of
the rise in crime could be that there was mandated social distancing and quarantining. People had an easier time committing crimes because no one was around to deter the crime from occurring.
