This week’s readings taught me that The NASW Code of Ethics created 6 core values and standards to guild social workers’ conduct. (National Association of Social Workers. (2021) In my view, The NASW code of ethics serves as a foundation for addressing ethical challenges. It aims to protect the clients we serve while providing a framework of guiding principles and practical ways of thinking, using common sense and our best judgment. In addition to the Code of Ethics, professional ethics refers to a set of principles and expectations that hold social workers and employers responsible for matters that are not clear-cut in social work practice. The Social Worker's Ethical Responsibilities in the practice setting are divided into ten sections. The first section focuses on Supervision and Consultation . Its goal is to equip social workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to supervise or consult appropriately, but only within their areas of expertise. According to the National Association of Social Workers (2021), supervision is meant to provide feedback on service and performance matters and must be effective. Inadequate supervision can be harmful to clients if clear and appropriate boundaries are not set. For example, I experienced an incident with a client who insisted on living in an inhabitable apartment with animal feces on the carpet. It was a safety issue and had the potential to cause medical harm to the client. As a new case manager, I quickly learned that I did not have the knowledge or skill to provide the care my client needed. This is a situation where I had to use my best judgment to report this behavior to my supervisor to seek support against my client's self-determination. In the Education and Training section , the National Association of Social Workers (2021) emphasizes that social workers who teach or supervise students should inform clients when services are provided by students. This also applies to social workers in their practice, ensuring that clients are aware of any training or observation. This is crucial for maintaining client confidentiality and avoiding dual relationships. The standards for the Client Records section focus on accurately documenting the services provided. It is crucial to keep a record of every interaction with clients to create a timeline of services and track their progress in treatment. This documentation should reflect the nature of the service and be as accurate as possible. Client records also align with 3.05-Billing. Social workers should establish and maintain billing practices that accurately reflect the nature and extent of services provided and that identify who provided the service in the practice setting (NASW, 2021). Social work practice settings require supervision and consultation, education and training, and proper client record-keeping to ensure that clients receive appropriate and adequate care from trained professionals. As social workers, we uphold this ethical standard by maintaining a professional demeanor in all forms of communication and being mindful of our personal values and biases, promoting fairness in the services we provide to our clients.
