In this Discussion, you identify the population, sample, and sampling technique for your study. You then consider ethical or cultural issues related to the population that you should address. Please use the Learning Resources and the NASW Code of Ethics to support your post (i.e., cite and reference). Population refers to only those cases that theoretically might be selected as research participants, potentially accessible (Yegidis, Weinbach, & Myers. 2018). For my population, I have spoken with incarcerated and previously incarcerated individuals who would benefit from having a social worker as an advocate in the prison system. A sample is a subset of cases selected for study from among people or objects within a defined population (Yegidis et.al.,2018). I would use a nonprobability sampling technique for my proposed study. The selection of participants is based on the researcher's discretion. Purposive Samples “are selected because researchers believe that the cases can provide them with access to a unique approach to a problem or situation, or a special perspective, insight, expertise, experience, characteristic, or condition that they wish to understand” (Yegidis et.al., 2018). This study is within the ethical principles of the NASW because it specifically focuses on social justice. For example, “social workers’ social change efforts are focused primarily on issues of poverty, unemployment, discrimination, and other forms of social injustice” (NASW 2023.) My study would include incarcerated and previously incarcerated individuals who may have benefitted from having an advocate. References Yegidis, B. L., Weinbach, R. W., & Myers, L. L. (2018). Research methods for social workers (8th ed.). Pearson. Page 128 (Review) Chapter 9: Sampling Issues and Options (pp. 202–222) National Association of Social Workers. (n.d.). I am also researching the prison population. I think the research on this subject is very much needed. I too chose to use purposive sampling. As you point out, using purposive sampling can offer unique insights for your study on women in prison. As you stated in your post, Alysia, Great topic and I enjoyed your post. I am also researching the prison population. This population is desperately in need of social justice. Identifying clusters and then randomly picking a predefined number of clusters aids in the creation of a probability sampling research sample (Yegidis et.al., 2018). I think there are about four of us who chose this population for our research. Your study also aligns with the NASW code of ethics for challenging social injustice and pursuing social change.
