Sexuality Across the Lifespan Case Study Worksheet Directions: Select one of the three case studies. After reading your case study, complete the worksheet below. Learner Name:Medlin Mamulu Name of Case Study:Tad Section 1: Describe the issue you chose to focus on from the case study. What is the population concerned? How does the issue affect that population? The issue that is presented in this case study is the influence of religion against premarital sex. The population in this case study are Young adolescents and teenagers. Many religions have described premarital sex as sinful and unholy and marital sexual relations as morally correct and sanctified.Tad was born and raised as a Catholic, which teaches that premarital sex is a sin.The main issue affecting the Young population is the taboo of premarital sexual relations. These young adolescents are having sexual urges but are now left with the issue of going against their religious beliefs to satisfy their desires or staying strictly committed to their beliefs. Section 2: Describe the theory you chose. Apply that theory to the issue faced by the person depicted in the case study. How does the theory shed light or help explain the issue? Be sure to choose at least one behavior or comment made in the case study to provide as an example. The theory that I chose for this case study is the learning theory. The learning theory is a theory in which behaviors are learned through social learning , behavioral modifications, operant conditioning or either classical conditioning(Hyde,J. S., & Delamater,J. D.(2017).In pertaining to 1
Tad’s case, he has learned that premarital sex is immoral and sinful by watching his parents and listening to religious leaders. This becomes evident when Tad states "Whenever we get too close to losing control, it's like I hear my priest's voice and that kills the mood “.Being able to understand that Tad’s feelings about pre marital sex are based on social learning, gives a better understanding as to why he feels he is under extreme societal pressure . Section 3: Choose one behavior or comment in the case study you would like to know more about. Create a research question that could be used for a scientific study that would provide answers about the behavior or comment you selected. In the case study on Tad, Tad stated that he has watched sex only be for traditional couples that are married his entire life. Tad has acquired this mentality through the social learning (the learning theory). I would like to see research done that explains if ideas/beliefs like Tads's (obtained via social learning) can change with time and exposure from different social environments. My research question: Can individuals exposed to new social learning change beliefs and ideas previously Learned through religion and family culture ? 2
