Describe a diverse population with a different cultural background than your own that you hope to work with as a future counselor. As a future counselor, I would like to counsel incarcerated individuals. I do not have a specific cultural group. They have a story to tell, whether it's good or bad. I want to help those who are learning to reintegrate back into society. As a case manager, I work with many individuals who were released from prison, and often, they tend to have a hard time coping with being outside of a prison cell. They tend to revert to their old behaviors while in prison because they usually stick to what they know is comfortable. I want to ensure they receive appropriate services when they leave prison. Describe three assessments that you would use with your diverse population. Remember to include the general assessment principles in your description of each instrument . Offender Reintegration Scale, Second Edition. The offender reintegration scale is a self- reported assessment that measures any barriers or concerns current and ex-offenders may experience when reintegrating into society. Self-reports allowed for clients to guide their own self-estimated competencies and their abilities. Self-reports accommodate several levels high school students, college and adults (Neukrug & Fawcett, 2015) . The assessment are created to be east to read from several ages across the board (Neukrug & Fawcett, 2015) all This assessment covers various prison statuses such as incarceration, work release, probation, and parole. This assessment takes approximately 20 mins and is self-administered, self-scores, and self- interpreted. The price is $61.95 for every 25 scales. The assessment is easy to complete, straight forward (Liptak, 2016).
Prison Inmate Inventory:  The assessment determines the inmate's needs while incarcerated. The PII helps to profile inmates and get a complete picture of who they are and any risk factors. This assessment is a 189-item self-report for assessing risks and risk identification for inmates. The responses are true/false with a 4- or 5- point Likert scale—Spanish and English. The assessment has a sixth-grade reading level. This assessment is by the staff; it has scales when scoring truthfulness, violence, antisocial, adjustment, self-esteem, alcohol, drugs, judgment, distress, and stress coping abilities. The assessment is 35 mins in length. The assessment is $9.95 per test. This assessment is in Spanish and English (Risk & Needs Assessment, 2000).  Level of Service/Case Management Inventory: An Offender Assessment System : This assessment aims to determine the level of case management an offender may need to meet their needs. This assessment is delivered to offenders between the ages of 16 and over. This assessment includes family, marriages or companions, criminal history, anti-social behaviors, attitude, education, employment, etc. This exam takes about 20-30 mins with an interview component (Andrews, Bonta, & Wormith, 2004). assessment has nine total scores with an additional 8 Risk/Needs Factors, including criminal history, education/employment, family/Marital, Leisure/Recreation, Companions, Alcohol/Drug Problem, Pro-criminal attitude/Orientation, and Anti-Social Pattern. This assessment costs $485 per hand score kit, and interview guides with 25 items, offender history forms, quick score forms, color plot profile forms, and case manager protocols (Andrews et al., 2004). Explain your rationale or why you would use these assessments with your diverse population.
I chose this population because this is a population of individuals who are not always considered when considering populations to help. Inmates tend to come with different backgrounds and mental capacities. Inmates need good services while incarcerated, such as medication management, proper diagnosis if needed, education, trade, and a program where they can learn and skill and take it with them. Outside of prison, clients would benefit from case management. Having someone to support them and provide them with resources and medication would better help them assimilate into society. I understand that clients in prison have case workers, but it may be beneficial if prisons offer intensive case management until they feel comfortable enough to be on their own.
