Research Proposal Part 1 Latasha Gibson Walden University SOCW 6301: Social Work Practice Research 1 Dr. Janell Mullis January 29, 2023
Research Proposal Part 1 Family caregivers of people with Dementia often called the hidden additional patient, are critical to the quality of life of the care recipients. Though sometimes positive, the effects of being a family caregiver are generally adverse, with high burden rates and psychological morbidity. Factors contributing to load and strain for caregivers caring for people with Dementia are depression, social isolation, physical illness, financial hardship, and delayed nursing home admission or assisted living. Maintaining management of the patient with Dementia includes building a rapport between health professionals and family caregivers. The caregivers reveal how Dementia changes family relationships, leaves people socially isolated, and affects family caregivers' health and finances. All too often, family caregivers sacrifice their well-being to ensure their loved one has the best care possible. Their experiences underline the urgent need for research to make breakthroughs possible. The research question I have generated is about Caregivers' burden of care for patients with Dementia within the African American community. By 2025, an estimated 7.2 million Americans expected to have Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of Dementia, accounting for 60–80% of cases of Alzheimer’s Dement; (2021). Immuncompromised related health issues; Black American elderly adults with Dementia currently are more than double that of non-Hispanic or Caucasian, more senior adults. African American dementia caretaker experience provides a proposed such as discovering other social determinants of health with family, community, and social activity. African American dementia caregivers influence the different magnitudes of experience in providing care. The most vital identified gap within this population is family dynamics in the health care setting which will always be ongoing diffraction that caregivers shape will have to face. Caring for someone with
Research Proposal Part 1 Dementia greatly strains the caregiver's physical and mental health. It can also place tension in the relationships with other family members and cause neglect. The identified gap among Black American caregivers is having enough programs for caregivers that will provide a way to cope with stress and be successful while caring for an elderly dementia family member. In Dementia, there are some unique challenges that caregivers face. The extended course of Dementia is by developing cognitive decline and loss of decision-making capacity. As Dementia gradually increases, participation in medical decision-making. The caregiver again takes the extra role of being solely accountable for the person with Dementia when it comes to medical decision- making, having a power attorney in place before that person with Dementia's memory starts to decline.“From a public health perspective, it has become increasingly evident that Black Americans bear more significant burden of poor health than other population groups. Black dementia caregivers began behind the health curve before the pandemic (Alexander et al., 2022 ). Caregivers experience different changes with someone with Dementia, such as motor skills, loss of memory, failure to recognize various family members, and behavior issues. With more research from the community input on care and with help from the caregivers living with persons with Dementia. Based on my methodological approach to my research, Dementia does not show bias. It affects people of all races and backgrounds and their environment as well. This research's importance is expanding support for people with Dementia disease and their families. My study will be the qualitative approach to my analysis. I chose this approach based on research to improve diagnosis and care for people with Dementia and their families and to find a treatment or prevention to assist with caregivers' support. Caregivers take this role of being responsible for ensuring all financial and health issues are taking care of on top of ensuring they are healthy.
