Institutional Racism Social Work Problem Phillip Christian Grand Canyon University UNV 510 Ms. Bowers December 13th, 2023
Introduction Institutional Racism is an ongoing issue within the world and there is a lack of support for students of color, employees of color, and colored folks going through the legal system. This essay will talk about three important things: who is affected by institutional racism, the challenges that are faced with the social work problem, and the ongoing efforts to create and implement change. People of color who have gone through discrimination find it difficult to succeed in their goals within the education and workforce realm. This is a serious problem and we need to research and udnerstand why this is happening in society. There are a vast number of challenges that people of color face within the system such as lack of support from teachers, lack of representation in court, being racially profiled and labeled as unintelligent, and not having a voice to create change in policies due to white leaders in the sytem. The efforts that are being made allow for there to be hope in humanity that diversity will start to be recognized and understood by our leaders within our schools, jobs, and legal system. We are working together to help dismantle systemic racism and to be advocates and activisits to create change in the way people of color are treated within the system. Progress is being made and this essay will help to paint a picture of the changes that are happening. Institutional racism negatively impacts society today impacting healthcare, employment, and education. Working together to help dismantle systemic discrimination is crucial towards creating a fair and just society for all. Challenges of Institutional Racism
Instituional Racism makes it hard for many people of color and there are many challenges that come with institutional racism. One of the challenges being that people of color don't have the same opportunities for being hired or promoted at work and/or being admitted to a specific college or program. Students of color are less likely to have resources in their schools due to poverty and segregation, have a less rigorous curriculum which at times could lack pre requiseites for admissions, and are more likely to be suspended than white students (Toldson, I.A., 2020). Another challenge that involves instutional racism is that there are stereotypes and baises against people of color. People assume specific information about colored folks which can lead to discrimination and a lack of support from leaders within the different systems. These biases are negatively impacting people of color and the lack of awarness of these stereotypes and biases towards colored individuals is causing an unjust an inequitable society for people. An article that talks about inequities in agricultural workers dicusses what it's like to work as a person of color. During COVID-19, monetary relief checks were distributed to most but not for a majority of agricultural workers due to being a non US Citizen. Often times, undocumented workers which make up more than 50% of agricultural workers are discriminated against and put into a box for their legal status and race ( Yearby, R., Lewis, C., & Gibson, C., 2023). Another huge challenge that is faced in this Social Work problem is the lack of representation from leaders within the educational, workforce, and legal system. It's important that there can be more diversity placed within these leadership roles so that everyone despite their race can feel like they have a voice. Institutional racism is prominent within the legal system and our leaders within this system lack diversity. People of color going through the legal system and courts anre more likely to be stopped for traffic stops, have a rough time with plea bargaining, and there being a sentencing disparity from colored folks compared to white folks ( Gomez, K., 2022).
