Gutierrez 1 Gina Gutierrez November 21, 2023 Health Disparities in the US Professor Armand Eudora wants to bring down the rates of underage drinking and opioid usage among young adults and teens. If Eudora were to choose to use the health belief model, she could start by assessing the communities' beliefs about how severe the substance addiction I and what their ideas are on lowering the percentage. “The health belief model (HBM) is a psychological model that attempts to explain and predict health behaviors by focusing on the attitudes and beliefs of individuals.” (Chapter 5, pg.120) This model was developed in the 1950s when social psychologists in the US public health system explained the lack of public participation in health screenings. By using the health belief model, Eudora can model out the percentages of American Indians in her community that underage drink and see what they have in common whether that be problems at home or issues with mental health. The model will let her get an idea of the long- and short-term behaviors of each of these individuals and come up with ways to help them individually, because not all teens and adults are drinking or doing opioids for the same reason. Not only is this giving her insight into how many are using drugs, but will help her categorize them by either age, gender, or even personality, social status, or group pressure aka peer pressure. Some adults and teens may be drinking and using opioids for structural use, such as having health issues or having just found out about a health condition. When Eudora is making her social media campaigns, ways that may make them more effective and have them draw attention to the people she is targeting would be to use culturally relevant messaging. Examples of this are using languages that are spoken within the community, using images that are relevant to the community, and comforting wordage. Eudora may collaborate with other influencers on social media that are trying to provide help for the same groups of people in their communities and can work together to make their campaigns. Eye-catching things such as morals and stories of the community may incline teens and adults, even the people of the community to approve her proposal and give back to the community. Eudora needs to ensure that the teens and adults are going to feel cared for and not feel that she is just in it for the money and won’t end up lowering the percentage of drinking and opioid usage. The evaluation
Gutierrez 2 strategies will bring her whole campaign together based off of the ones she chooses to use. The best strategies that I believe will improve her campaign are taking their culture into consideration, which includes sensitive community tools, that will involve community members in the evaluation process. Eudora could make an anonymous survey that has questions about the living situation of the person, mental health status, and if they are using opioids or are underage drinking. The survey answers would be sent directly to her only for her to evaluate and receive a better understanding of what groups of people require help. Culture-wise, she can have them state their ethnic background and race to categorize the amount of American Indian children and adults that are using any type of opioids or underage drinking.
