Amy Johnson Assignment 4 Communities of Practice Project In the last decade in our society we have seen an increase in technology, along with the advent of social media and the way in which we as individuals communicate with one another daily. This perforation with the administers the media and technology has even made its way into the world of academia, and how students are now able to not only find information, but also collaborate with other students on live from around the world to discuss different educational concepts and objectives that they are dealing with is online learning in a dynamic learning environment. Today’s online learner as part of an ever-growing community whereby the students can participate and comprehensive learning and instruction through technology, creating an atmosphere where we are all part of a connected learning community that is constantly evolving and growing with the amount of communication, knowledge and resources that are being shared by a diverse group of individuals. This essay will focus on communities of practice, and how these learning communities have made learning a much more productive and constructive environment for students to be self-guided in their educational pursuits, while at the same time being directed and guided by outlined instruction in the virtual classroom by their professors. Understanding how these online communities of practice function in terms of the digital and technology platforms they use for their students, analyzing whether there is a membership or fee for being part of the learning communities for students. Lastly, investigating how knowledge is built in these communities with adult learners, and will exactly monitors these communities online to ensure their legitimacy to the learners, with an online community of practice name Educause and this organization meets the needs of its learners and clients through technology.
The first item we must address is the definition of online communities of practice as understood by educational leaders in the field of academia. Online communities of practice are groups or associations of like-minded individuals that share a common interest in a subject or for the study and can share their thoughts and opinions about the subjects online through streaming and collaboration. These communities of practice are membership groups that have a quest for knowledge, and in many instances go beyond the typical scope of inquiry to get answers on subject matter that is germane to their learning community as members (Bates, 2014). In doing research for this topic I came across an online community of practice that fits the description of these active learning communities in terms of their learning problems and the educational skill sets and advantages that it offers its members. The organization Educause.edu is an Information Technology organization for both students in the field of IT along with IT professionals and networking and understanding how IT can affect the framework of not only their educational organizations, but also any organization these individuals are affiliated with in the future as employees and or citizens in the community. Educause.edu was founded in 1998, between two association in a merger CAUSE and EDU.com, to help companies and educational organizations, better understand the comprehensive framework of information technology for businesses and institutions of higher learning in understand issues such as cyber security, and how organizations should communicate digital information to their clients (2018 Students and Technology Research Study: What undergrads think about technology and how they use it, 2019). As with any community of practice online this group meets to online webinars and conferences annually to talk about the different issues and concerns that plague students and
professionals in the field of IT, with being able to meet the needs of their customers whether they be in the business world or in the field of education. In looking at the success of this particular organization it’s distance learning education theory in my opinion has a lot to do with connectivism meeting that the learners are all connected together online, from different in various cultural and educational backgrounds having the ability to come together and collaborate about exploring new educational ideas and objectives while at the same time having the wherewithal to understand where existing educational concepts into their development as learners (Kop & Hill, 2008). Educause.edu functions as an open educational resource, and that it is available to that only IT organizations and professionals, but also institutions of higher learning as well as organizations and IT marketing as well. The thought process behind having this educational organization operate as a open educational resource provides a great framework for there to be input not only on the issues and the field of IT, but also finding more constructive ways to have the resources provided for this organization to best fit the needs of its members in the future technology (Create OER with Open Author, 2019). Since Educause is an open-ended educational forum for individuals, there is no fees for membership to be part of this organization, which means that IT professionals and students can exchange thoughts and ideas without there being some type of hierarchy for individuals who may pay for their membership. This organization bills on the knowledge as a online community of practice because it is allowing professionals in the field of IT to share their knowledge and skill sets with not only students but organizations they may come in contact with in the future on ways to better build the IT structure in terms of the amount of information these organizations may disseminate to their customers and coming up with comprehensive cyber security measures
