Name: Robert McCants III (Rya Amour) Date: November 20, 2023 SCENARIO: Your supervisor has approved your research question and plan for studying some aspect of diversity and/or collaboration in a community group. Now it is time to conduct your literature review and develop your hypothesis and research plan. ASSIGNMENT: In the first Touchstone, you developed a research question and prepared a preliminary bibliography for your literature review. You will now conduct your literature review, formulate your hypothesis and research plan, and develop a set of notecards that summarize your work. SOCI1010 Unit 3 Touchstone Template Complete the following template, including all parts, using complete sentences. NOTECARD 1, Introduction: Your introduction card should introduce your audience to the community group being studied. Remember, it should be a group in which membership is voluntary and recreational. I n particular, be sure to answer the following questions: What is the community group? What are the attributes or characteristics of this community group? (e.g. What activities does this group do together? What element of the members' interests or identities brings them together? How is membership in the group defined, if at all?) Is there anything else listeners should know about this group that is relevant for your research proposal? Name and description of your community group. The community group I have selected is known as Crossroads Church. In addition to being a place of worship, Crossroads Church actively engages with the local community by offering various forms of support. By providing essential resources such as food, clothing, and assistance, Crossroads Church plays a vital role in assisting individuals who are in need and may not have access to these necessities otherwise. This inclusive group convenes on a weekly basis and warmly welcomes individuals from all walks of life. For those who are interested in making a difference, Crossroads Church offers numerous volunteering opportunities, allowing individuals to contribute to a greater cause. NOTECARD 2, Research Question:
State your research question. What methods does a church employ to connect with the community and garner support? NOTECARD 3, Literature Review: Describe and analyze your source. Include the bibliography information of author’s name(s); publisher and publication date; title of the source, in quotation marks; page numbers (if applicable); and source's location for web-based texts (URL). Describe the source and how it is relevant to your research proposal. Questions you could answer about your source include: Who wrote this article? Do they have an academic affiliation? Are the researchers sociologists, or are they of a different discipline? Where was this article published? When was the research conducted? What question were the researchers attempting to answer? How does this question/topic relate to my question/topic? What methods did they use to study their question? What conclusions did they draw from their results? How do their conclusions relate to my research question, hypothesis, or research plan? Bibliography information for your first source Description and analysis Dr. Ann Michel, Kim Mitchell, and Lovett H. Weems Jr. (2014) have authored a publication titled "50 Ways to take Church to the Community." The authors have made significant contributions to the field of church leadership and clergy. Dr. Ann Michel, who has served as the associate director for the Lewis Center for the past five years, holds a Doctor of Ministry in Church Leadership, a Master of Theological Studies, and a Bachelor of Science in Speech. She is also an accomplished author, having written multiple books on church leadership and clergy. Dr. Lovett Weems Jr., on the other hand, is the senior consultant for the Lewis Center and holds a Doctorate in Theological Studies. He has authored numerous books focusing on church leadership and effective leadership practices, as well as addressing the challenges faced by the church. The authors' webpage provides a comprehensive list of fifty examples that demonstrate how churches can extend their reach into the community. These examples not only aim to assist those in need but also strive to attract individuals to the church. Among the various ideas presented, the authors highlight the effectiveness of partnering with other institutions or commercial establishments. This approach allows churches to engage with a more diverse group of individuals who may not have been previously aware of the church's presence. The significance of this article lies in its ability to offer well-considered strategies for attracting new members and making a positive impact on more lives. By exploring innovative ways to
connect with the community, churches can expand their influence and fulfill their mission of serving others. NOTECARD 4, Literature Review: Describe and analyze your source. Bibliography information for your second source Description and analysis Ronald J. Sider, a prominent theologian and social activist, is widely recognized for his role as the founder of Evangelicals for Social Action. In addition to his significant contributions in the field of social activism, Sider holds esteemed positions as a professor of Theology, Holistic Ministry, and Public Policy at Palmer Theological Seminary. Heidi Rolland Unruh, on the other hand, serves as the Director of the Congregations, Community Outreach & Leadership Development Program at Outreach Inc. Unruh's academic background includes a Master's degree in Theology & Public Policy, complemented by a Bachelor's degree in Social Science. The resource provided, the article titled "How do Churches Reach out to their Communities?" by Sider and Unruh, proves to be highly relevant to my study. Not only does it offer valuable insights into the various approaches employed by churches to engage with their communities, but it also sheds light on the potential drawbacks of limited diversity in these outreach efforts. By exploring the negative aspects, the article encourages churches to broaden their horizons and adopt more inclusive strategies in order to effectively connect with the outside world. NOTECARD 5, Literature Review: Describe and analyze your source. Include the bibliography information of author’s name(s); publisher and publication date; title of the source, in quotation marks; page numbers (if applicable); and source's location for web-based texts (URL).
