1 Sarae Zepeda JUS-212 9/18/2022 Gina Sween Analysis of Criminology Criminologist Criminologist analyze the extent and nature of a crime in society. They are the scientists in the Justice system. " A criminologist is one whose professional training, occupational role, and pecuniary reward are primarily concentrated on a scientific approach to, and study and analysis of, the phenomenon of crime and criminal behavior."(Siegel,2017,p.6) They analyze crime patterns, designate hotspots by gathering data and creating statistics from existing criminals or crimes. They want to know how much crime occurs, who or what kind of persons commit said crime and what crimes deserve the most attention. In a nutshell the four most common duties performed by a criminologist are formulating techniques for collecting institutional records (police and court), Developing surveys to gather crime data not given to the police mostly by victims, identifying victims , and measuring community level crime which can be used to test crime theories(Siegel).Criminologist are of the most important factors and contributors in the justice system. They keep it levelheaded and unbiased. The use of science, data, theories, and statistics remove any emotional or biased feelings. Criminologist work closely with law enforcement to help prevent crime before it occurs or then apprehend criminals before or after a crime has been committed.
2 Sarae Zepeda JUS-212 9/18/2022 Gina Sween Three Methods The three methods criminologist use to measure crime are The Uniform Crime Report (UCR), National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), and National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The Uniform crime report program incorporates data from more than 18,000 cities, colleges, state, tribal, and federal law agencies. This program generates reliable statistics for law enforcement use. This program has been in use since the 1930s (FBI, 2018).This is an effective method because it measures homicides and arrests. It is a consistent and reliable source for law enforcement (Sween,2018). Next, is NIBRS. This system was implemented in order to improve the quality of the facts that was collected by law enforcement. It captures details on a single crime and also other offenses that happened within the same incident (FBI, 2018). This system considers the crime as a whole but goes in depth regarding to minor offenses thus improving the quality of data collected. Lastly, is the NCVS. This is the nationals primary source of information on criminal victimization. Victims of crime have been given an outlet to explain their situation to someone who isn't the police. Data collected includes information about the offender, characteristics of the crime, whether the crime was reported and reason why or why not, and the victims experience with the criminal justice system (BJS, 2020). The victims experience with the justice system can impact their decision to report a crime. According to Professor Gina Sween (2022) "Strengths of the NCVS are that it includes crimes not reported to the police, uses careful sampling techniques, and is a yearly survey"( Slide 5).
3 Sarae Zepeda JUS-212 9/18/2022 Gina Sween Accurately Measuring Crime The tools and programs stated above are awesome resources for law enforcement and are praised for their accuracy and relevancy. Accurately measuring crime is highly important. According to the article "Why National Crime Statistics are important" published by Walden University states " Crime statistics can be a tool in helping criminal justice professionals anticipate increased risk of crime. This can be followed up by law enforcement intervention to prevent the predicted crimes from occurring."(2021). Budget formation, resource allocation, and initiative assessment are more factors that rely on the accuracy of crimes reported. Statistics can help law enforcement determine which part of the community needs more security cameras, speed checks or even patrolling. Accurate information can also allow them to come up with initiatives to decrease crime. If there is a car burglary hotspot, the city might take the initiative of installing more street lights or secured parking garages. If crime is inaccurately measured it will disperse financial and personal resources to the wrong places. Potentially causing more crime.
