1. What are the five different types of social movements? Describe aspects of each social movement and provide one example of each of these social movements Reformist Movement- seek to make gradual changes within the existing social, political or economic system. One example is Civil Rights Movement. This movement aimed towards ending racial discrimination and segregation. Religious/Revolutionary Movement- strive for profound and rapid changes. An example of this movement is The French Revolution which is aimed at radical political and social transformation. Redemptive Movement- this movement focused on personal transformation, to bring change in individuals rather than society. Self-help movement emphasized on personal growth and well being. Alternative Movement- Propose alternative lifestyles or systems within existing framework. For example the environmental movement, advocated for sustainable living and conservation. Resistance Movement- In response to perceived oppression and or injustice. Aiming at resisting or undoing specific social changes. An example of this would be The Occupy Movement, which protested economic inequality. 2. Identify the three theoretical perspectives of collective behavior. Choose one of those theories and explain in detail and provide specific examples of how collective behavior occurs. The three theoretical perspectives of collective behavior are emergent-norm perspective, value-added theory and assembling perspective. The value- added theory aims at support is added to the social movement by adding value to an individual’s life. For example protesting for affordable housing. If success is achieved through this protest, it can positively impact the well being of an individual and
the value of his/her community. Therefore there would be increased support for the cause. References: Blummer, Herbert. 1969. “Collective Behavior.” Pp. 67-121 in Principles of Sociology, edited by A.M. Lee. New York: Barnes and Noble.
